Position Details
Under the direct supervision of an assigned administrator or designee, the Drone Competition Mentor supports elementary, middle, and high school drone competition programs. Incumbents in this classification are college students with drone piloting and team experience who mentor student competitors, assist coaches, and perform technical duties related to drone practices, competition missions, equipment, programming, and events.
Essential Functions - Typical Duties

• Mentor and support elementary, middle, and high school students during drone practices, team activities, scrimmages, and competitions.
• Assist coaches with team organization, practice activities, mission preparation, and student engagement.
• Guide students in drone piloting, flight control, mission strategy, teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and sportsmanship.
• Support students as they prepare for team flight, individual flight, autonomous flight, and other assigned competition missions.
• Perform technical duties related to drones, controllers, batteries, charging equipment, field elements, computers, software, programming tools, and competition systems.
• Assist with the setup, testing, calibration, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and storage of drone equipment.
• Inspect equipment before and after use and report damaged, missing, or unsafe equipment to the assigned supervisor.
• Reinforce established flight procedures, competition rules, equipment requirements, and safety protocols.
• Support students with introductory programming, autonomous flight planning, and related technical skills as assigned.
• Help students develop collaboration, leadership, strategic thinking, and effective team roles.
• Model positive behavior, inclusivity, responsible equipment use, and good sportsmanship.
• Assist with drone scrimmages, tournaments, demonstrations, showcases, and other district or school events.
• Maintain an organized and safe practice and competition environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must have achieved at least sophomore standing and be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university.
• Demonstrated experience piloting drones and participating in a competitive or team-based drone program.
• Experience with drone equipment, controllers, batteries, flight systems, autonomous programming, or competition platforms is preferred.
• Current FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification is not required; however, certification is considered an additional qualification.
