Job Description
The Drafter 3 plays a key role in developing high‑quality 2D drawings and 3D models that support plant retrofit and other engineering projects. This position requires extensive drafting experience and strong proficiency with CAD tools to translate design and engineering input into accurate, detailed documentation. The role also involves field verification and collaboration with engineering and plant teams to ensure designs meet quality, safety, and performance standards.
Responsibilities
- Use 2D and 3D CAD software to develop accurate models and detailed 2D drawings based on information provided by designers and engineers.
- Revise and update existing 2D drawings to support plant retrofit projects and other design changes.
- Participate in plant-site walkdowns to obtain field data, measurements, and dimensional information for design purposes.
- Apply engineering design principles and standards to ensure drawings and models are accurate, consistent, and compliant.
- Collaborate closely with plant staff, design engineering teams, and vendors to gather requirements and clarify design details.
- Lead small projects or drafting workstreams, managing priorities and deliverables to meet project timelines.
- Ensure all drafting work aligns with quality, safety, and design excellence standards.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with stakeholders to resolve design issues and incorporate feedback.
- Work alongside another in-house drafter to coordinate workloads and maintain consistency in drafting practices.
- Support projects related to transmission or distribution systems when applicable, or adapt drafting expertise to other industrial environments.
Essential Skills
- 7–10 years of professional drafting experience.
- Strong proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD tools and design software.
- Hands-on experience using AutoCAD for drafting and design work.
- Ability to develop and revise 2D drawings and 3D models with a high degree of accuracy.
- Knowledge of engineering design principles, standards, and best practices.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to interpret design requirements and resolve drafting issues.
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate with designers, engineers, plant staff, and vendors.
- Ability to lead and manage small drafting projects or work packages.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality, safety, and design excellence.
- Ability to build effective working relationships across plant and engineering teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in drafting and design is preferred.
- Experience with Vault or similar design data management tools.
- Experience in transmission or distribution projects is preferred.
- Experience in related industries such as manufacturing, civil, or industrial facilities is beneficial.
- Experience working on substation-related projects is a plus.
- Comfort working with both 2D and 3D drafting environments.
- Ability to adapt drafting skills to different industry settings and project types.
Work Environment
This role operates in a hybrid work environment that combines in-office collaboration with remote flexibility. The drafter typically works on site, with the option to work remotely one day per week. You will use AutoCAD and other CAD tools, as well as design data management systems such as Vault, while working closely with another in-house drafter and engineering teams. The work involves both office-based design tasks and occasional plant-site walkdowns to collect field data and verify dimensions, in an environment that emphasizes safety, accuracy, and effective teamwork.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Forest Park, GA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
