Position Summary

The Draft & Design Specialist supports The Blackhawk Group’s Engineering organization by developing and maintaining accurate engineering models, drawings, and technical documentation for aviation products and modifications. This role works closely with engineers, technicians, and other engineering team members to create drawing packages, maintain legacy products, support engineering changes, and identify potential design issues. The ideal candidate brings a strong technical foundation, hands-on drafting and design experience, and aviation industry knowledge, allowing them to contribute effectively with limited ramp-up time while continuing to grow their technical expertise.

Essential Functions

  • Create and maintain project master models.
  • Create engineering drawings from a blank sheet using company-provided formats and standards.
  • Prepare rough sketches, detail drawings, and drawing packages using computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) systems.
  • Develop 3D models and detailed engineering drawings using design software.
  • Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and other engineering personnel to develop complete and accurate drawing packages.
  • Work with Engineering staff to maintain and update legacy products and associated technical documentation.
  • Create Engineering Orders (EOs) and revise drawings as required.
  • Review drawings and models for accuracy, completeness, and consistency with engineering requirements.
  • Identify potential design issues and communicate concerns to the appropriate engineering team members.
  • Participate in the engineering drawing check and review cycle.
  • Coordinate with Document Control to ensure drawings and related documentation are properly released.
  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation and follow established drafting, design, and document-control processes.
  • Attend department and company meetings as required.
  • Perform other engineering and drafting duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, or a closely related technical field preferred.
  • Degree or technical diploma from an accredited technical college in drafting, design, engineering technology, or a related discipline also considered.

Experience

  • Aviation experience is required.
  • Experience in computer-aided design and drafting (CADD).
  • Demonstrated experience creating engineering drawings, models, and technical documentation.
  • Experience working collaboratively with engineers, technicians, and cross-functional teams.
  • Experience working from established drawing standards, formats, and engineering requirements.
  • Mechanical aptitude and the ability to understand mechanical systems and components is preferred.
  • Ability to create or interpret manual sketches is preferred.
  • SOLIDWORKS experience, 6–8 years preferred.

  • Technical Drafting & Design: Strong understanding of drafting and design principles, engineering drawings, CADD systems, and technical documentation.
  • Aviation Knowledge: Working knowledge of aviation products, aircraft systems, components, and/or aviation engineering practices.
  • Attention to Detail: Produces accurate, complete, and consistent drawings and documentation while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.
  • Problem Solving: Identifies potential design issues and communicates them effectively to engineering team members.
  • Collaboration: Works effectively with engineers, technicians, Engineering leadership, and other internal stakeholders.
  • Organization: Manages multiple projects, drawings, revisions, and documentation requirements while meeting established deadlines.
  • Communication: Communicates technical information clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
