About the Department of Medicine

TheDepartment of Medicine is home to 20 categorical residents peryear, which includes a Primary Care Track and a Distinctions Trackin Care Transformation, plus 5 preliminary interns in Medicine.Dell Seton Medical Center (DSMC) is a 220-bed, safety net, Level 1Trauma Center, and serves as the inpatient training facility forthis program. In September 2021, Dell Med's IM program deployed aresident staffed team to Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin(SMCA) Hospital. SMCA is a full-service hospital with 24/7emergency care and comprehensive Level 1 Stroke Center. SMCA alsohas a Level IV Trama Center.

About the Division Chief of GastroenterologyPosition

The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin isseeking an exceptional board certified Division Chief ofGastroenterology at the Associate Professor rank or higher to jointhe Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

The faculty will be responsible for the growth of a GeneralGastroenterology practice either at a site of our hospital partner,Ascension Seton, or at the future site of The University of TexasMedical Center.

Ascension Seton is the leading provider of healthcare services inCentral Texas, serving an 11-county population of 2 million. Theorganization operates 5 major medical centers, 2 communityhospitals, 3 rural hospitals, a mental health hospital, severalrehab/medical centers for well patients, and 3 primary care clinicsfor the uninsured.

The position will comprise of inpatient gastroenterology consultservice, outpatient clinics, and endoscopy. There are no scheduledoutpatient clinics during inpatient weeks. The position includesprotected time for academic activities and may include teachingresidents. The hospital and clinics are located in CentralAustin.

The Division Chief ad-interim for Gastroenterology and Hepatologyserves as the strategic and operational leader of the division,overseeing its clinical, academic, and research missions. This roleinvolves directing high-quality patient care, expanding specializedclinical programs, and fostering interdisciplinarycollaboration.

The Chief is responsible for recruiting, mentoring, and retainingfaculty and staff, while also promoting a culture of excellence andprofessional development. The Division Chief plays a pivotal rolein mentoring, coaching and advising faculty members within thedivision, actively contributing to their individual and collectivefaculty development and professional growth. In addition, the Chiefplays a key role in advancing Gastroenterology and Hepatologyeducation through oversight of fellowship, residency andundergraduate medical education and training, and in supporting arobust research agenda. As a representative of the division, theChief engages with institutional leadership and community partnersto align the division's goals with broader organizational andsocietal needs.

Qualifications

Required:

  • MD degree with Board Certification inABMS-Gastroenterology.
  • Candidates with training in advanced endoscopy are encouragedto apply.
  • Training and experience in quality improvementinitiatives.
  • Eligibility for appointment at the (Clinical) AssociateProfessor level.

Preferred:

  • Ability to communicate with others in a clear, understandableand professional manner in person and on the phone.
  • Effective professional management skills, including the abilityto plan, organize and schedule work in an efficient and productivemanner, focusing on key priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to interact with peers, executives, employees, andconsultants in a manner that represents the Dell Medical School andAscension Seton positively.
  • Sound judgment in decision-making, and importantly clinicaljudgment.
  • Ability to learn and apply new information, knowledge andexperiences in a timely manner.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to change.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks and projects and toprioritize.
  • Plan, promote, demonstrate, recommend and coordinate highstandards of evidence-based medical practice.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
