Job Summary

The Director of Risk Management is responsible for the day‑to‑day operations of the Risk Management program, serving as the primary liaison for internal contacts, brokers, and other external partners. The role implements and oversees risk mitigation initiatives, policies, and services, and supervises the management of university claims.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Determine methods for handling risk exposures and recommend mitigation strategies to senior management.
  • Identify and drive improvements to overall risk‑management processes and documentation in collaboration with various departments.
  • Formulate and direct the comprehensive enterprise risk‑management program.
  • Implement and oversee risk‑mitigation programs, policies, and services.
  • Supervise the management of university claims, including workers compensation, property, automobile, aviation, general liability, medical professional liability, and employment‑practices liability.
  • Develop management reports to communicate and monitor risks, ensuring timely and effective responses.
  • Educate, train, advise, and coach managers on risk‑related issues, policies, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Analyze, plan, and advise administration on comprehensive insurance coverage.
  • Design an efficient claims administration infrastructure.
  • Oversee investigation and administration of property, automobile, general liability, and workers’ compensation claims; manage data reporting into risk and claim databases; perform claim‑history analyses.
  • Recommend and implement policies and procedures for claims handling; analyze and monitor claims data; research trends in claim activity.
  • Collaborate with departments such as General Counsel, Business & Finance, Audit & Compliance, Provost, Office of Research, and Student Affairs to assess various types of contracts.
  • Confirm insurance provisions align with department risk tolerance and suggest revisions or consult experts.
  • Recommend additional risk‑transfer options (including insurance purchases) for exposures in specific contracts.
  • Collaborate on contracts and agreements to ensure risk compliance with university policies, applicable laws, and proper vetting before signature; serve as liaison with third‑party administrators; prepare documents and correspondence; conduct presentations.
  • Represent the university at regional, state, and national meetings; establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external contacts.
  • Study insurance market conditions to design optimal risk‑financing programs.
  • Prepare insurance budgets; manage procurement of actuarial studies and other managerial reports to aid senior leadership decisions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or accounting.
  • Five years of progressively responsible risk‑management experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • Previous experience in higher education.
  • Experience in risk‑management functions (e.g., insurance, claims, compliance).
