Duties and Responsibilities

PURPOSE :

With oversight from the Office of the Provost, theDirector will provide leadership, critical program management, andadministrative services for undergraduate research to students andfaculty at Bowie State University. He/She will be the primaryadministrator responsible for the organization and functioning ofthe undergraduate research program in all departments. The Directorwill work with faculty and staff, undergraduate advisors, andstudents on departmental and University policies concerning theundergraduate research program. The goal of this position is toscale up undergraduate research on campus, foster excellence, andattract world-class talent to innovate and prepare our students forresearch leadership in the future.

  • Actively engage in the development of the research ecosystemand infrastructure.
  • Develop a vision to expand and improve undergraduate researchand creative opportunities across the university.
  • Provide support to undergraduate students, graduate studentmentors, and faculty involved in research across theuniversity.
  • Support undergraduate students in finding researchopportunities and guiding them through the competitive landscape ofSTEM PhD program admissions.
  • Develop new programs, collaborate with research mentors, andlead outreach efforts to on- and off-campus partners.
  • Collaborate with faculty leaders and senior administrators todirect, plan, develop, and administer programs and resources thatsupport both students and faculty who are involved in the researchprograms that reflect community and industry needs andexpectations.
  • Secure funding from federal, state, national, and internationalagencies and companies to enhance the research infrastructure andfund undergraduate research and dissemination through publicationsand conferences.
  • Manage and scale up across the campus the Course-basedUndergraduate Research Experiences ( CURE ), the Summer andSemester-Based Undergraduate Research Institute ( SURI ), andsupervise full-time staff.
  • Assist with identifying undergraduate research opportunities,scholarships, and fellowships.
  • Participate in and represent the university at externalmeetings and be involved with the Council on UndergraduateResearch.
  • Collect and analyze data to effectively assess undergraduateresearch programs and their impact.
  • Coordinate events, celebrations, and symposia related toundergraduate research.
  • Develop and conduct workshops and outreach activities relatedto undergraduate research programs.
  • Oversee internal undergraduate grant applications, and awardprocesses, and manage undergraduate research ambassador and peermentor programs.
  • Participate in local and national conferences and workshopsrelated to undergraduate programs.
  • Develop and maintain undergraduate research projectdatabase.
  • Serve on various committees as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s Degree is required.
  • A PhD is preferred.

Experience

  • At least five years of related experience, preferably within auniversity setting, or an equivalent combination of experiences,education, and training.
  • Experience and proven success in securing and managing grantsand contracts
  • Experience in student support services, advising, or programsupport

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Possess a broad understanding of undergraduate research andcreative scholarship across academic disciplines.
  • Demonstrate success in project and people management, andcultivate relationships with faculty and staff from diverseacademic disciplines.
  • Possess strong written and oral communication skills and becomfortable giving public presentations.
  • Articulate a strong commitment to diversity, equity, andinclusion and illustrate how they have advocated and expandedresearch experiences for underrepresented student populations.
