Position Title: Director of Technical Services
Reports To: President/Executive Producer
ROLE OVERVIEW
The Director of Technical Services is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing the technical planning, staffing, execution, and ongoing development of Mindpool Live’s video production operations. This role ensures that all live events, concert productions, broadcasts, and video systems operate reliably, safely, and at the highest professional standard.
This leader manages technical staff, guides engineering workflows, oversees system design, and serves as a key strategic partner to Mindpool Producers and Account Managers. They will be accountable for advancing technical solutions, elevating production quality, and maintaining a culture focused on innovation, preparedness, and exceptional client service.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Execution:
- Direct the technical execution of all Mindpool Live productions, ensuring crews, gear, and workflows are fully prepared and aligned with project goals.
- Lead all aspects of pre-production technical planning including system design, signal flow diagrams, engineering plans, and crew requirements.
- Supervise and guide engineering and technical crew (internal staff, engineers, A/V specialists, and freelancers) in shop and on location during show prep, load-in, setup, rehearsal, show execution, and strike.
- Oversee live show operations and provide real-time engineering leadership, including troubleshooting switchers, cameras, LED systems, projection, playback, comms, and networking.
- Ensure all productions adhere to established quality standards, redundancy requirements, safety practices, and professional engineering protocols.
- Debrief with production and technical teams to identify opportunities for workflow improvement.
- Provide post-show reports including technical notes, equipment failures, and suggested upgrades.
- Collaborate with Mindpool Producers and Account Managers to translate creative concepts into actionable technical plans and workflows.
- Conduct technical “advances” with artists, tour managers, festivals, production companies, and corporate clients to clarify expectations, deliverables, and technical compatibility, and ensure on-site readiness.
- Provide on-location leadership and serve as a technical point of contact for clients, ensuring smooth communication and professional representation of Mindpool Live.
- Oversee configuration, maintenance, and long-term development of company production systems, including multicamera flypacks, LED walls, projection systems, playback solutions, streaming kits, comms, and networking infrastructure.
- Audit and optimize signal flows, routing, redundancy, and overall engineering efficiency across Mindpool Live’s systems.
- Lead innovation initiatives—researching, testing, and implementing new technologies to strengthen Mindpool Live’s competitive edge.
- Collaborate with engineering staff to schedule repairs, preventative maintenance, updates, and equipment certifications.
- Directly supervise all internal video engineering and technical staff, providing coaching, feedback, evaluations, scheduling, and conflict resolution.
- Identify or develop training programs to elevate technical crew skills, as needed.
- Promote a culture of preparedness, accountability, and professional conduct on-site and in the shop.
Operational & Administrative Responsibilities
- Manage vendor relationships, negotiate equipment rentals, and coordinate third-party technical resources, as needed.
- Oversee equipment inventory accuracy, tracking, and long-term planning using Flex Rental Systems or similar platforms.
- Participate in annual budget planning, technical expenditures, and equipment procurement strategies.
- Maintain proper documentation of workflows, system configurations, engineering standards, and safety procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 7+ years of experience in live event production, broadcast engineering, or technical production management.
- Advanced working knowledge of video systems including multicamera workflows, IMAG, LED processing, projection systems, switching, playback, signal routing, and live streaming platforms.
- Experience leading technical teams in fast-paced, high-pressure production environments.
- Proficiency with Ross switchers, Sony cameras, Blackmagic Design equipment, and related video systems.
- Familiarity with production networking (NDI, Dante, VLAN management) strongly preferred.
- Experience with Flex Rental Systems or similar inventory platforms is a plus.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts to clients and non-technical team members.
- Demonstrated ability to design, document, and implement professional video workflows.
- Strong problem-solving instincts and ability to remain calm and effective during real-time show challenges.
- Experience managing budgets, procurement, and vendor relationships is a plus.
- Ability to operate as on-site Technical Director, Video Director, or Production Manager for select productions is a plus.
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree in Film, Broadcast, Communications, Technical Theatre, or equivalent experience preferred (not required.)
PHYSICAL & SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift 40-50 lbs and work on your feet for extended periods
- Willingness to travel for shows, as needed
- Availability for early mornings, late nights, weekends, and long show days, depending on a varying production schedule and needs
