Director of Intramural Sports

Description

A dual-function role carrying equal responsibility for (1) buildingand administering a comprehensive intramural and recreationalsports program and (2) the preparation, maintenance, and managementof athletic facilities and the coordination of athletic and campusevents. The position reports to the Director of Athletics and theDirector of Facilities & Equipment Operations and supportsathletes, students, coaches, and instructors in athletics,recreation, and class activities.

Examples of Duties

Intramural & Recreational Sports Program

• Plan, develop, and administer a year-roundintramural/recreational program, including leagues, tournaments,and special events; design formats and manage all scheduling,playoffs, and championships.
• Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate officials,scorekeepers, and student employees.
• Establish and enforce rules, eligibility, conduct, andparticipant-safety protocols, including injury reporting andemergency response.
• Market offerings to grow participation; manage registration,communications, program budgets, supplies, and participationreporting.

Athletic Facilities Operations & Maintenance

• Prepare and maintain fields, courts, and surfaces forpractices, contests, intramurals, and rec use, includingscoring/timing devices and event setup.
• Inspect facilities and grounds, identify maintenance and safetyneeds, and coordinate repairs with appropriate departments andvendors.
• Maintain, store, and inventory all athletic, recreational, andgrounds equipment; ensure proper care, issuing/retrieving, orderprep, and each sport's laundry.
• Manage facility scheduling and access across athletics,intramurals, PE classes, and approved users; monitor safety andrisk-management standards.

Event Management & Game-Day Operations

• Coordinate and direct set-up, changeover, and breakdown forathletic contests, intramural events, and campus events inathletics facilities.
• Serve in a game-day operations role — logistics, equipment,signage, seating, staffing, and field/court readiness — workingwith coaches, officials, and outside groups.
• Coordinate facility-use agreements and event logistics with theDirector of Facilities & Equipment Operations; assist withcrowd management and post-event cleanup.

General

• Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Director ofAthletics and the Director of Facilities and EquipmentOperations.

Typical Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Sport/Recreation Management, PhysicalEducation, or related field (Preferred); High School Diploma orEquivalent required.
• Experience administering intramural/recreational/athleticprograms and/or managing facilities and events (Preferred).

Supplemental Information

• Strong written/oral communication, organizational, scheduling,and supervisory skills.
• Computer knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office;scheduling/intramural-management software a plus.
• Knowledge and experience in operations and field maintenanceequipment; ability to work evenings, weekends, and event-drivenhours.
• Valid Virginia driver's license.
