The Director of Construction Operations provides strategic leadership for Westbrook's mechanical construction division, overseeing operations, financial performance, project execution, workforce planning, and team development. This role partners closely with executive leadership to drive operational excellence, profitability, and sustainable growth.
Key Responsibilities:
Operations & Strategic Planning
- Partner with executive leadership to review budgets, WIP reports, departmental performance, and growth initiatives.
- Monitor industry trends, labor markets, emerging technologies, and competitive activity to effectively forecast workforce needs.
- Ensure compliance with licensing, certifications, workforce records, and timekeeping requirements in partnership with Human Resources.
- Review pre-construction estimates for accuracy and collaborate with the Chief Estimator to improve project outcomes.
- Manage labor and material costs by maintaining high standards for staffing, productivity, purchasing, inventory, quality, safety, and overtime.
- Partner with Accounting to ensure projects are completed, billed, closed, and collected on schedule.
Operational Excellence
- Establish and maintain departmental standards, processes, and best practices.
- Lead quality assurance initiatives to ensure compliance with company and regulatory standards.
- Coordinate with Fleet to ensure company vehicles are properly maintained and operational.
Leadership & Team Development
- Recruit, develop, and retain high-performing construction professionals in partnership with Human Resources.
- Lead, mentor, and support construction management staff.
- Conduct 90-day, six-month, and annual performance evaluations.
- Clearly communicate expectations, provide coaching, and foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.
- Minimum of five years of management experience leading a commercial mechanical construction division.
- Strong understanding of construction estimating, blueprint interpretation, and project takeoffs.
- Ability to analyze operational and financial data and make informed business decisions.
- Working knowledge of WIP reporting and financial statements.
- Excellent leadership, communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Valid driver's license required.
