Position Summary
The Director, IT Security for NYU's School of Arts and Science provides leadership for security initiatives and operations, ensuring the College's diverse academic and research goals align with the NYU Global Information Security Program. Serving as a liaison to the Global Office of Information Security, the Director facilitates compliance with university policies, contractual, and regulatory cybersecurity requirements of global research. Beyond technical oversight, this role emphasizes providing subject matter expertise, mentorship, guiding IT stakeholders in security best practices to build a culture of cybersecurity. Success depends on strong communication and relationship building, as the Director must translate technical risks for non-technical stakeholders and Principal Investigators. As the primary strategic liaison between the School and NYU IT, the Director ensures a seamless partnership that balances risk management in support of the University's academic, administrative, and research missions.
Qualifications
- Required Education: Bachelor's Degree in Information Security, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Preferred Education: Master's Degree.
- Required Experience: 5+ years of progressive IT experience focusing on strategy, operations, security, and/or technical management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Preferred Experience: 7+ years operating within a centralized IT environment or a large, complex organization (e.g., higher education or government), serving as a liaison between a local unit and a central service provider plus 3 years in a dedicated security leadership role.
- Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Experience in cybersecurity or related field; strong knowledge of security technologies, practices, and standards; working knowledge in Identity and Access Management, Cloud Security, Endpoint Security, Data Protection, Network Security, or Application Security; familiarity with cybersecurity standards such as NIST 800-181, NIST 800-53, ISO 27001; proficiency in security technologies, standards, and risk management strategies; leadership, communication, and team‑building skills with a track record of coaching, mentoring, and training; ability to communicate complex technical information to both technical and non‑technical audiences; problem‑solving and conflict management skills.
- Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or CISA; strong background in systems management, secure configurations and practices; background with Identity and Access Management, Cloud Security, Endpoint Security, Data Protection, Network Security, or Application Security; experience in cybersecurity risk identification and mitigation; effective communication and relationship‑building skills with multiple constituencies; project integration and management; flexible thinking, analytical, negotiation, problem‑solving skills; negotiation of conflict and constructive working relationships.
Additional Information
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $155,000.00 to USD $195,000.00. NYU considers factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, and market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
