Salary range: $200,000 – $400,000 (base salary $150,100 – $241,400)

Role Summary

The University of California San Diego seeks an internationally recognized leader in data sciences to serve as Director of the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute. The Director will guide the institute into its next phase of growth, build strategic vision, develop faculty and staff, strengthen partnerships, and advance academic programs and research.

Key Responsibilities

• Create a vision for HDSI that charts the path toward the future of data science at UC San Diego.
• Recruit, retain, and develop a world‑class faculty and staff.
• Promote interdisciplinary partnerships within HDSI and across UC San Diego.
• Build and scale academic programs in data science.
• Develop external partnerships to expand HDSI’s impact and generate philanthropic support.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

• Distinction as a researcher in a field relevant to HDSI’s mission and a record of innovations.
• Accomplishments in education or training suitable for a tenured appointment at a UC campus.
• A widely recognized record of leadership in areas of data science spanning scientific foundations and applied domains.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated integrity, fairness, ethics, and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
• Broad national or international recognition in a relevant field.
• Strong team‑building and collaborative program management skills.
• Management skills for leading a large, complex organization with evidence‑based decision making.
• Track record of industry engagement and fundraising.
• Effective communication with faculty, administrators, staff, and external partners.
