General Summary of Position

The Director Clinical Engineering directs overall operations of the Clinical Engineering department within MedStar Washington Hospital Center, MedStar National Rehab Hospital and surrounding medical practice locations. Responsibilities include clinical capital equipment planning, budgeting, acquisition, post‑warranty support options, contract management, and recommendations for maintenance or replacement. The director builds and maintains stakeholder relationships to align departmental objectives with organizational needs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures and ensure compliance with business unit policies, governmental, and accreditation regulations.
  • Develop and recommend the department operating budget and manage resources according to the approved budget.
  • Select, train, orient, and assign department staff; develop performance standards and conduct performance management planning; provide ongoing communication and feedback.
  • Direct overall operations of the Clinical Engineering department within assigned sites and region under the oversight of the Vice President of Clinical Engineering.
  • Plan, evaluate, and recommend purchase and technical design proposals for equipment acquisitions; provide guidance and consultation to senior administration and medical staff regarding technology assessment and utilization.
  • Produce comprehensive quantitative and qualitative analyses of all department functions; establish criteria and methods for data gathering and maintain appropriate documentation; submit analytical reports and recommendations as needed.
  • Participate in incident investigation and reporting related to equipment failures or patient safety concerns; contribute to Clinical teams and initiatives to define causes, recommend and initiate corrective actions; participate in the Environment of Care Committee, identify risks, complete objectives, performance measures, management plans, and annual evaluations for medical equipment.
  • Build and maintain stakeholder relationships within assigned sites and region to ensure understanding and alignment with organizational needs.
  • Mentor and develop associate skills; provide development opportunities through regular meetings to share coaching and information on changes in the clinical engineering field and their impact on operations and strategy.
  • Perform personnel leadership and management functions, including interviewing, hiring, scheduling, training, coaching, counseling, evaluating, and terminating employees to optimize efficiency and effectiveness of department operations; conduct performance evaluations and establish standards of performance.
  • Coordinate new projects and medical equipment installations; identify scope, provide estimates, work with blueprints and schematics, and lead the team to enhance processes and meet project goals.
  • Assist with monitoring, updating, and coordinating the accuracy and completeness of the Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS) to ensure integrity and adherence to established policies.
  • Work closely with Information Services colleagues on integration and security standards.
  • Establish and maintain clinical equipment vendor relationships; ensure vendor/contract compliance with MedStar Health standards; review and authorize all payments and maintain fiscal control over departmental expenditures; review all contracts related to clinical equipment and provide recommendations to leadership.
  • Participate in meetings and committees; represent the department and business unit in community outreach efforts.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams and maintain effective working relationships with other departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required or actively pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Experience

  • Five years of progressively more responsible, job‑related or management experience required.

Licenses and Certifications

  • CBET – Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician, CHTM, or CBET upon hire required; or actively pursuing CHTM or CBET and obtaining within two years required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Joint Commission and other regulatory agency accreditation requirements.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of management, internal departments, and external agencies.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to exercise independent judgment; business acumen and leadership skills.
  • Working knowledge of various computer software applications.
  • Ability to travel between sites as necessary.

Compensation

USD 114,004.00 – USD 219,960.00 per year.
