In this role, you'll help maintain and repair our fleet of school buses—ensuring safe, reliable transportation for students in your community.We offer a comprehensive and supportive work environment designed to help our technicians grow their careers while maintaining work-life balance.Competitive hourly pay: $28–$31/hour (based on experience and certifications)Additional $0.25/hour for each relevant ASE certification (we pay for the training and exams)Consistent Monday–Friday schedule, no nights or weekendsFull benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) with company matchPaid vacation and holidaysAnnual allowances for boots and prescription safety glassesAccess to state-of-the-art training programsDiscounts on phones, vehicles, and more through our Perk Spot programAs a Diesel Mechanic with First Student, your responsibilities will include:Conducting preventative maintenance and repairs on diesel school busesDiagnosing and repairing brake systems, suspensions, drivetrains, transmissions, and other major componentsPerforming routine service tasks: replacing lights, fuses, wiper blades, filters, belts, batteries, and fluidsCompleting and maintaining accurate work orders, maintenance records, and parts usage logsPerforming emergency mobile repairs as neededLeading inspections, safety checks, and annual maintenance processesUsing diagnostic tools, including manufacturer software, to identify and resolve issuesMaintaining a clean, safe, and organized shop environmentSupporting shop safety by identifying and reporting equipment issuesQualifications:At least 5 years of experience with diesel, automotive, electric, or CNG vehicles (or equivalent training/education)Valid driver's licenseWillingness to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire (training provided)ASE Brake Certification required within first 6 months (we cover costs)Adequate personal toolsetPreferred:ASE certifications (additional pay available per certification)Advanced mechanical and diagnostic skillsFamiliarity with DOT safety regulationsComputer literacy for diagnostics and maintenance recordsStrong communication and teamwork abilitiesAbility to work independently with minimal supervisionWorking Conditions:Shop environment with exposure to dust, grease, and outdoor weatherAbility to lift at least 50 pounds and work in physically demanding positions (crouching, under vehicles, etc.)Compliance with all DOT drug testing requirements (including restrictions on Schedule I substances such as marijuana)We welcome candidates who:Are returning to the workforceHave military or trade school experienceAre looking for stable hourly work (not flat-rate)Don't have a college degree but bring hands-on mechanical expertiseApply today to take the next step in your mechanic career with First Student and help keep the students of Guilford County safe on the road.
