Department Head – Electrical Mission Critical

Location: Boston, MA | Schedule: Full-time, hybrid (up to two days remote per week)

Overview

An established MEP/FP engineering firm with decades of experience designing mission critical facilities is seeking an Electrical Department Head for its Boston office. The firm works with hyperscale operators, developers, and federal agencies on data center projects supporting AI and cloud deployments, ranging from fit-ups of existing data halls to campuses exceeding 30 MW with dedicated substations. This role leads the electrical department while remaining hands-on with the office's largest and most technically complex projects, setting technical direction, serving as the senior electrical point of contact for data center clients, and signing as engineer of record. What you'll do

• Own the department's design guidelines and quality review process
• Mentor and grow the department's engineers and designers
• Review drawings, Revit models, and calculations before issue
• Lead electrical design on large data center projects from early planning through construction
• Coordinate with owners and mechanical and civil engineers to integrate power systems into overall project design
• Design to owner standards for hyperscale and colocation programs
• Design medium voltage distribution up to 35 kV and specify transformers, switchgear, and feeders
• Develop protection and control schemes, including relay settings, relaying diagrams, and control schematics
• Oversee power system studies

Required qualifications

• At least 15 years of electrical design experience, with substantial data center work, including hyperscale or colocation projects
• Licensed Professional Engineer
• Medium voltage distribution and protective relaying experience
• Experience designing redundant power systems for tiered facilities
• Track record leading engineering teams
• Working knowledge of Revit and BIM
• Engineering degree, or equivalent experience

Preferred qualifications

• LEED accreditation a plus
