Job Summary and Responsibilities

As the Department Chair of Core Clinical Specialties at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, you will lead the organization, oversight, and delivery of clinical care within Core Clinical Specialties serving hospital-based services such as Critical Care, Hospital Medicine, Radiology, Emergency, Anesthesia, and Pathology in the Puget Sound market of CommonSpirit's NW Region.

Every day you provide responsibility for establishing the department’s vision, objectives, and initiatives in strict accordance with the health system’s overarching strategy, advocating for departmental requirements while ensuring alignment with the broader strategic priorities of VMFH. In collaboration with the administrative executive, the Chair will implement robust provider alignment strategies, manage fiscal budgets, and safeguard financial sustainability. You will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of operational metrics, integrate methodologies to advance clinical programs, and optimize clinical results.

To be successful, you will facilitate multidisciplinary cooperation across divisions to foster excellence in clinical practice, education, and research, and serve as the primary representative for departmental communications with CommonSpirit and VMFH executive leadership, hospital administration, service line directors, and external partner organizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and enforce system-wide clinical care pathways, workflows, and quality initiatives, ensuring providers adhere to best practices.
  • Develop, review, and recommend updates to all relevant policies and standards for the department and ensure compliance by providers.
  • Oversee recruitment and retention of high-quality, culturally aligned providers, participating in hiring and onboarding.
  • Drive accountability for performance metrics, including productivity, patient satisfaction, and quality, and evaluate division chiefs and other physician leaders.
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, and professional development for division chiefs.
  • Participate in counseling and corrective actions regarding provider behavioral or quality-of-care issues.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Medical Officer, PE, and administrative partner to develop an annual strategic plan for the department with specific growth and quality initiatives.
  • Report to the Vice President of the Virginia Mason Franciscan Medical Group.

Job Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Board certification or eligibility in a relevant ABMS specialty.
  • Active or eligible license in the state of Washington.
  • Strong clinical skills with experience in programmatic development.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care.
  • Clinical and leadership experience.

Location

Virginia Mason Franciscan Health is located in the Puget Sound area, offering comprehensive care through its extensive network of hospitals and care sites.

Pay Range

$231,056 – $415,875 per year.
