Position: Dentist

Schedule: Full time (40 hours/wk)

Location: Mount Olive, West Virginia

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Regional Dental Director, a dentist licensed in West Virginia will supervise the dental staff and manage dental activity while providing oral health care to patients, such as fillings, extractions, dentures, root canals, and other restorative, surgical, periodontal, endodontic and prosthodontic services.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provide overall supervision of the dental department including hiring, coaching, counseling, administering discipline, and termination of subordinate staff as needed.
  • Provide preventative and restorative treatment to all inmates.
  • Perform and interpret radiographic examinations as indicated.
  • Perform all general dentistry services including restorative, surgical, periodontal, endodontic and prosthodontic services described by West Virginia Health Service Bulletins.
  • Supervise staff in cleaning teeth, making impressions for prosthetic devices, planning and maintaining an oral hygiene program, completing appropriate records accurately, and all procedures associated with the provision of dental care.
  • Arrange proper referral for procedures that cannot be performed on‑site at the facility.
  • Provide supervision of staff in instruction of offenders in preventative practices for maintaining proper oral hygiene.
  • Submit monthly reports of Dental Department activities.
  • Participate in staff development programs.
  • Develop and update departmental policies and procedures.
  • Supervise and evaluate all assigned dental staff.
  • Forward all outside referrals of offenders to the Regional Dental Director and assure the necessity for such referrals.
  • Serve as clinical authority on all matters related to the delivery of dental services, providing direction, guidance, and oversight to the dental staff and programs.
  • Determine the timeframes for non‑emergent and elective treatments according to priority and availability.
  • Determine the appropriateness of non‑routine treatment and ensure it does not interfere with the provision of greater priority services.
  • Examine patients and document findings on standard forms using applicable dental classification systems (e.g., APHA).
  • Provide or arrange for appropriate preventative restorative dental care as needed within administrative guidelines to all inmates.
  • Provide or arrange for appropriate care for emergency patients as soon as possible.
  • Ensure continuity of care.
  • Supply data for clinic reports as requested.
  • Keep dental licenses up‑to‑date and maintain current copies on file in the Health Care Unit.
  • Be CPR certified and skilled in recognizing the symptoms of shock and fainting, and prepare to provide necessary aid during emergency procedures.
  • Ensure dental office security, including instrument, medicine, and needle counts.
  • Ensure appropriate and quality orientation for all newly hired dental staff.
  • Notify the Wexford Health Staffing Department of vacant or upcoming vacant positions in a timely manner and assist in filling vacancies.
  • Be familiar with overtime and commodities budgets and work to remain within budget.
  • Notify Regional Manager of staffing vacancies.
  • Obtain approval of Wexford Health and WVDOC administration prior to exceeding staffing hours.
  • Strive to ensure 100% compliance of staffing hours.
  • Comply with and enforce Wexford Health/Facility Policy and procedures and ensure subordinate compliance.
  • Serve as a member of the Quality Assurance Committee.
  • Receive direction from WVDOC personnel as appropriate.
  • Maintain confidentiality of inmate records.
  • Approach change in a positive manner.
  • Accept constructive criticism in stressful situations and make suggestions for improving work conditions to the Medical Director, Health Services Administrator, and Regional Manager.

Job Requirements

  • Current West Virginia Dental license
  • Current DEA license
  • Current CPR certification
  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM) degree

Preferred Experience

  • Minimum one (1) year practicing dentistry
  • Skilled in recognizing the symptoms of shock and fainting; prepared to provide necessary aid as directed during procedures.
  • Correctional experience preferred
  • Supervisory experience preferred
