Position: Dentist
Schedule: Part time (3.2 hours/week)
Facility: Donald R. Kuhn Juvenile Center
Location: Julian, West Virginia
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Regional Dental Director, a dentist licensed in West Virginia will supervise the dental staff, manage dental activities, and provide oral health care to patients. Responsibilities include preventive and restorative treatment, radiographic examinations, and a range of general dentistry services as described by West Virginia Health Service Bulletins.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Provide overall supervision of the dental department, including hiring, coaching, counseling, and administering discipline or termination of subordinate staff as needed.
- Offer preventative and restorative treatment to all inmates.
- Perform and interpret radiographic examinations as indicated.
- Deliver all general dentistry services, including restorative, surgical, periodontal, endodontic, and prosthodontic care.
- Supervise staff in cleaning teeth, making impressions for prosthetic devices, planning and maintaining an oral hygiene program, completing accurate records, and all associated procedures.
- Arrange proper referrals for procedures that cannot be performed on‑site.
- Instruct inmates in preventative practices for maintaining proper oral hygiene.
- Submit monthly reports of dental department activities.
- Participate in staff development programs.
- Develop and update departmental policies and procedures.
- Supervise and evaluate all assigned dental staff.
- Forward all outside referrals of offenders to the Regional Dental Director to assure necessity.
- Serve as clinical authority on all dental service matters, providing direction, guidance, and oversight to staff and programs.
- Determine timeframes for non‑emergent and elective treatments based on priority and availability.
- Assess appropriateness of non‑routine treatment to ensure no interference with priority services.
- Examine patients, document findings on standard forms using applicable classification systems (e.g., APHA).
- Provide or arrange appropriate preventative restorative care within administrative guidelines.
- Offer or arrange timely care for emergency patients.
- Ensure continuity of care.
- Supply data for clinic reports as requested.
- Maintain up‑to‑date dental licenses and ensure a current copy is on file.
- Be CPR certified and skilled in recognizing shock and fainting symptoms; be prepared to provide aid during emergencies.
- Secure the dental office, including instrument, medicine, and needle counts.
- Orient newly hired dental staff with appropriate quality orientation.
- Notify the Wexford Health Staffing Department of vacant or upcoming vacancies and assist in filling positions.
- Familiarize with overtime and commodity budgets, working to remain within budget.
- Notify the Regional Manager of staffing vacancies.
- Obtain approval from Wexford Health and WVDOC administration before exceeding staffing hours.
- Strive for 100% compliance of staffing hours.
- Enforce Wexford Health/Facility policy and procedures, ensuring subordinate compliance.
- Serve on the Quality Assurance Committee.
- Accept direction from WVDOC personnel as appropriate, including Wardens, Assistant Wardens, and Health Services Administrators.
- Maintain confidentiality of inmate records.
- Approach change positively.
- Accept constructive criticism under stress and suggest improvements to the Medical Director, Health Services Administrator, and Regional Manager.
Job Requirements
Licensure:
- Current West Virginia Dental license
- Current DEA license
Certification: Current CPR certification
Education: Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM) degree
Preferred Experience:
- Minimum one year of practicing dentistry
- Skilled in recognizing shock and fainting symptoms, with readiness to provide aid during procedures
- Correctional experience preferred
- Supervisory experience preferred
