Responsibilities
- Supports preanalytical, analytical, and post‑analytical laboratory workflows.
- Processes, aliquots, prepares specimens for transport/testing and performs CLIA waived and moderate‑complexity testing.
- Supports microbiology, molecular, urinalysis, and chemistry laboratory areas.
- Determines acceptability of specimens within guidelines, labels, stores, and prepares reagents/standards/calibrators.
- Performs daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance activities; documents appropriately.
- Rejects inappropriate specimens; logs specimens into laboratory information system.
- Recommends appropriate test orders and assists in test selection.
- Selects appropriate culture media, incubation temperatures, and atmosphere for microbiology cultures.
- Organizes and prioritizes work for optimum turnaround time; observes safety guidelines.
- Performs streaking and quantification of bacterial plates.
- Evals new products, assays, systems, and instrumentation.
- Performs linearity, sensitivity, precision, correlation, and reference range validation.
- Follows test protocols, performs dilutions, calculates data, and performs identification and susceptibility testing.
- Completes proficiency testing within assigned timeframe; conducts quality control and calibration.
- Investigates out‑of‑control QC and resolves issues before testing resumes.
- Performs competency assessments of testing personnel.
- Teaches procedures to students, peers, and new employees.
- Maintains QC testing and documentation per regulatory agencies.
- Reviews worksheets and maintenance logs; investigates or corrects as needed.
- Ensures CLIA waived and moderate‑complexity testing is performed with good laboratory practice.
- Recognizes implausible results, unusual reactions, errors, and instrument malfunctions; investigates and problem‑solves.
- Enters results accurately and documents required notifications.
- Improves turnaround time by using work center logs and computer functions.
- Communicates unresolved method and equipment problems using manufacturer resources.
- Supports smooth operation by contributing ideas and assisting in cost‑effective changes.
- Provides support for lead tech, managers, and coordinators, and assists other laboratory sections.
- Maintains instruments, refrigerators, freezers, and work/storage areas; cleans and fills consumables.
- Generates electronic messages, prepares reports, and completes data sheets using computer capabilities.
- Communicates incidents, complaints, and concerns to appropriate parties and enters them into the event reporting system.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science or related field (required).
- Experience in a clinical laboratory setting; familiarity with pre‑, intra‑, and post‑analytical processes.
- Strong technical skills in specimen handling, reagent preparation, and quality control.
- Knowledge of microbiology culture techniques, incubation, and identification.
- Ability to perform CLIA waived and moderate‑complexity testing and follow manufacturer specifications.
- Proficiency in data entry, result verification, and use of laboratory information systems.
- Effective communication skills for discussing findings, troubleshooting, and training.
- Commitment to safety, accuracy, and quality assurance.
Compensation & Benefits
The compensation range for this position is $23.43 per hour – $39.13 per hour. Actual compensation depends on experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked, and compensation model.
