Primary Purpose:
Provide direct support to a student with deaf-blindness for all or part of the instructional day, as determined by the students individualized education plan (IEP)
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Educational Aide Certificate
  • Some college (preferred)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Knowledge of deaf-blindness (preferred)
  • Ability to use various modes of communication, e.g. signing (including coactive), objects, pictures, etc. as documented in the student's IEP
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Word and Excel software
  • Ability to learn district management systems
  • Ability and willingness to participate in ongoing trainings in the area of deaf- blindness
Experience:
  • Two years of experience (preferred)
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Assist a student with deaf- blindness to actively participate in activities
  • Provide a supportive and effective environment that promotes learning within campus guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Participate as a full educational team member in developing and implementing the student's IEP, under direction and supervision of the classroom teacher
  • Provide direct support to a student with deaf- blindness during all or part of a school day, as part of an educational team and as indicated in the student's IEP
  • Follow the student's IEP, and modifications and instructional techniques recommended by the student's instructional and related service staff
  • Implement instructional plans provided by the teacher/case manager
  • Become proficient in a student's individual communication methods and strategies
  • Create instructional materials, as needed
  • Accompany and support the student during community-based instruction
  • Maintain communication between home and school
  • Maintain a daily log of information about the student and his/her activities
  • Participate in IEP meetings and student staffing
  • Participate in the assessment of the student and in preparation of IEPs, progress reports, behavior plans, data collection and other documentation for program monitoring
  • Participate in site-based, regional and statewide training in the area of deaf- blindness
  • Serve as a resource to other staff on issues related to deaf- blindnessServe as a resource to other staff on issues related to deaf- blindness
  • Follow team decisions, established policies and procedures, and designated lines of communication and authority
  • Follow all rules, regulations and policies of Plano ISD and follow directives from supervisor
  • Follow attendance policy as assigned by supervisor
  • Perform other functions that may be assigned by the administration and/or supervisor

  • Student technology, as determined by student's IEP; computer, telephone and copier

  • Emotional maturity, stability, ability to perform under stress and frustration tolerance; exercise good judgment, cooperation, tact, and discretion in dealing with the student, family and others; communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policy, procedures and maintain emotional control under stress; maintain confidentiality
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
  • Work in close physical proximity to students while frequently touches to communicate with and instruct students who are primarily tactile learners; frequent district wide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours; frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling
