About the Role

Data Scientist

Location: Murray, Utah

Work Arrangement: In‑Office / Hybrid

We are looking for a Data Scientist to join Bear River Mutual Insurance. In this role you will build and deploy predictive models that directly influence business decisions. You will partner closely with underwriting, claims, IT, and customer service teams to uncover opportunities for data‑driven solutions and to measure model impact. Your work will help improve underwriting, fraud detection, and customer retention, making Bear River Mutual more efficient and better positioned for the future.

Responsibilities

  • Build, validate, and deploy predictive models, including claim cost, customer retention, underwriting risk scoring, and fraud detection.
  • Explore new data sources and evaluate their potential value for modeling and business insights.
  • Monitor model performance and contribute to model governance and performance tracking practices.
  • Partner with underwriting, claims, IT, and customer service teams to understand business challenges and identify data‑driven solutions.
  • Present findings and recommendations in a way that is understandable to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Perform ad‑hoc analyses to support strategic and operational business decisions.
  • Collaborate with the broader analytics team on cross‑functional initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Actuarial Science, or another quantitative field.
  • Three or more years of experience building and deploying predictive models.
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, and Git.
  • Strong understanding of statistical and machine learning principles.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively with both technical and non‑technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in insurance, financial services, or another regulated industry.
  • Familiarity with model governance frameworks or risk management practices.
