Data Center Product Design EngineerDo you love utilizing your creativity, spatial reasoning & attention to detail to collaboratively solve design challenges? The Apple Data Center Product Design Engineering team works with other engineering groups to seamlessly integrate technology into the next generation of Apple's Server and Storage Hardware. Our team's culture is centered around rapid iteration with open cross-functional feedback and healthy debate to curate the best outcomes.As a Data Center Product Design Engineer, you will support development of systems from chip to server to rack. Your role will be to engineer products from concept to production in order to produce the most energy efficient, cost effective, and scalable designs possible!ResponsibilitiesCollaborate with system architects, product integrity, hardware, software, and technology groups to define, refine, and execute on the design of the product.Develop initial product layouts, generate concepts, prototype, demonstrate & test to drive decision-making.Create specifications for design partners to implement.Partner with external vendors & internal subject matter experts to optimize designs for performance, security, cost, service and manufacturability.Ensure designs meet requirements throughout their lifecycle by performing stress, tolerance, and failure analyses.Work closely with our data center operations team, security, and safety teams to ensure that designs meet or exceed our existing standards and agreements.Minimum QualificationsBS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent5+ years Mechanical Engineering experience in the design of server, storage, and Hyperscale data center productsStrong engineering fundamentals: solid mechanics, material science, heat transfer, mechanism design, manufacturingExperience with the server mechanical development cycle from prototyping to high volume manufacturingExperience working with JDM vendors to create components and assemblies for prototypingExcellent written and verbal communication skills: ability to clearly convey design ideas and requirements within the team and to cross-functional partners and vendorsA strong sense of ownership and drive for excellenceAbility to engage in healthy collaborative debate and a keen analytical mindsetAbility to travel up to 20% in North America and Asia to support factory buildsPreferred QualificationsMS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalentExperience with the following server design areas: sheet metal design, soft and hard tooling, PCBA mechanical design, silicon integration, heatsinks and thermal interfaces, fans, cable and connector construction, rail kits, racks, cable management hardware, and design for assembly and repairExperience with Unigraphics NX CAD modeling softwareUnderstanding of packaging design and testing at a system and rack levelWorking knowledge of structural analysis and FEAExperience with tolerance analysis, statistical process control, metrology and simple fixture designWorking knowledge of mechanical testing methodologies including Instron, strain gauge, accelerometer, fit and function validationExperience with failure analysis; strong logical reasoning skills and methodical approach to finding root causeApple is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to inclusion and diversity.
