Position Summary
Bird Rock Systems is seeking a mid-level Cybersecurity Engineer who thrives in client‑facing, billable professional services work and wants to grow within a company that values loyalty, integrity, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement.
This role is designed to build depth across a focused set of security domains, develop trusted customer relationships, and grow technically, professionally, and personally.
Role
This role is intentionally focused and will primarily concentrate on three to four of the following domains, depending on customer needs and strengths:
Identity, Endpoint, and Data Protection
- Identity security, access controls, and endpoint hardening.
- Data Loss Prevention (DLP) strategies and implementation.
- Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) concepts, including visibility into sensitive data locations, exposure risk, and misuse.
- Practical protection of data across endpoints, cloud services, and SaaS platforms.
Cloud & SaaS Security (Azure / M365-Centric)
- Secure configuration and posture management for cloud and hybrid environments.
- SaaS security controls aligned to real‑world operational usage.
- Translating cloud security risk into actionable remediation for customers.
Security Operations, SOAR, & Integrations
- Security operations tooling with a focus on automation, orchestration, and integration.
- Designing and improving SOAR workflows to reduce noise and accelerate response.
- Integrating signals across identity, endpoint, cloud, and data controls.
- Supporting investigation and response readiness without 24/7 SOC shift work.
Compliance & Continuous Control Readiness
- Helping customers operationalize security controls to support compliance requirements.
- Enabling continuous evidence collection, control validation, and audit readiness.
- Translating compliance frameworks into practical, sustainable security practices.
- Partnering with customers to reduce audit friction while improving real security posture.
The emphasis is on connected security outcomes—how controls, data, automation, and compliance reinforce each other—rather than isolated tools or narrow silos.
Location
Must be based in Southern California or Phoenix, Arizona. Visits to our San Diego office may be required at the manager’s discretion. This role requires onsite presence as often as needed based on customer engagements. Travel is driven by client needs and project scope.
Main Duties
- Deliver client‑facing, billable security services across customer engagements.
- Work onsite with customers as required to build trust and drive successful outcomes.
- Implement, configure, and support security solutions within your primary focus areas.
- Participate in security assessments, gap analyses, and remediation planning.
- Translate risk and requirements into practical, defensible security solutions.
- Communicate clearly with customer stakeholders—technical and non‑technical alike.
- Produce clean, professional, client‑ready documentation and deliverables.
- Collaborate with senior engineers, architects, and delivery leaders to grow your capabilities.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement—making systems, processes, and yourself better over time.
Use of AI in Your Workflow
We value engineers who use AI to enhance productivity—such as accelerating research, troubleshooting, scripting, or documentation—while maintaining strong validation, security judgment, and customer trust. An interest in expanding thoughtful AI adoption as a supporting tool is encouraged.
Technology Environment
You’ll work with security platforms aligned to Bird Rock Systems’ technology partners and professional services offerings, primarily across identity, endpoint, cloud, and security operations solutions. Specific tools vary by customer, reinforcing the importance of strong fundamentals and adaptability.
Qualifications & Experience
- 3–6 years of hands‑on cybersecurity or security‑focused infrastructure experience.
- Practical experience in at least two of the core focus areas listed above.
- Prior client‑facing experience or strong customer communication skills.
- Comfort working onsite with customers as engagements require.
- Solid understanding of security fundamentals, risk, and defense‑in-depth.
- A mindset oriented toward long‑term growth and ownership, not short‑term wins.
- Mid‑to‑large enterprise experience.
Preferred Skills How You Work
- Consulting or professional services background.
- Scripting or automation experience (PowerShell, Python, etc.).
- Relevant certifications (Security+, AZ‑500, SC‑200/300, or similar).
- Familiarity with security frameworks such as NIST or CIS.
Professional Growth & Career Path
At Bird Rock Systems, growth is intentional. This role is structured to help you:
- Deepen expertise within your domains.
- Gradually expand technical scope as your skills mature.
- Learn directly from senior engineers and architects.
- Take on larger, more complex customer engagements over time.
- Build a long‑term career, not just a resume entry.
We value engineers who want to grow the value they provide and invest in the relationships they help build.
How You Work
- You take pride in delivering high‑quality work and following through.
- You value integrity, transparency, and accountability.
- You care deeply about customer outcomes and long‑term trust.
- You believe continuous improvement applies to people, not just technology.
- You want to be part of a team that gives back and supports one another.
Compensation
- Compensation Range: $100,000 – $140,000.
- The above represents the expected compensation range for this requisition. Ultimately, in determining pay, we’ll consider location, experience, and other job‑related factors.
Our compensation structure recognizes performance, drives growth, and aligns personal success with company success.
