Major Responsibilities
- Possesses a thorough knowledge of aseptic technique and its application.
- Assists in obtaining and organizing supplies and instruments prior, during and after surgical procedures.
- Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
- Assists the registered nurse circulator in preparation of patient, assembly of supplies, instruments, equipment, and proper disposition of all specimens; assists with all aspects of room turnover.
- Assigned to heightened specialized procedures: neurosurgery and spine, cardiothoracic, vascular, complex orthopedics, and robotics.
- Performs duties according to department policy and procedure.
- Monitors surgical supplies and instrumentation for sterility prior to use and ensures supplies are used judiciously, charges are documented and submitted accurately.
- Monitors and documents sterilization activities until completion.
- Attends in‑services and staff meetings; exhibits knowledge of current department‑related issues and participates in the Performance Improvement Process.
- Participates in educational opportunities to increase competency and meet personal needs and goals.
- Assists in the development of policies, procedures, and standards.
- Serves as a preceptor and a clinical resource to others.
- Assumes responsibility for individual specified unit clinical projects and oversees service lines as needed.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of surgical technology required or successful completion of a military training program for Surgical Technology or Operating Room Specialist.
- Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider required.
- Current certification required through NBSTSA or NCCT.
- Five years of total operating room experience in a surgical technologist role required; two years of specialized training in neurosurgery and spine, cardiothoracic, vascular, complex orthopedics, or robotics required.
- Meets all ST III qualifications of the Surgical Tech Ladder.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to respond to age‑specific issues and data reflective of the patient’s status.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for patients across all age groups.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Works with occasional intermittent noise and exposure to dust, fumes, and chemicals.
- Requires ability to communicate and write clearly.
- Strenuous physical effort is required, including walking, stretching, bending, climbing stairs, twisting, and squatting or kneeling while performing tasks.
- May have lengthy periods of standing and frequent use of side vision, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
- Must be able to lift and support the weight of 35 pounds.
- Requires use of both hands and all fingers for gripping, speed work, and precision during operation equipment and instruments handling, and movement or positioning of surgical patients.
- Vision and hearing for distances of up to 20 feet are required; depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors are required.
- Ability to work for lengthy or irregular hours, rotating shifts, on hard surfaces, near moving equipment, and changes in temperature, humidity, and exposure to blood‑borne pathogens.
