Custodian I: $1,483.52 - $1,635.59
*Current County employees may be eligible for a higher step placement per the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
The Del Norte County Building Maintenance Department is seeking a qualified candidate to fill one (1) vacancy for the position of Custodian II. This position is classified as full-time.
To maintain the County's public buildings and facilities in a clean and orderly condition by performing a full range of janitorial/custodial duties, including but not limited to sweeping, stripping, waxing, buffing, vacuuming, and washing of floors, operating janitorial equipment. This work consists of routine manual labor at an entry-level classification. Employees in this classification receive direct supervision within a well-defined framework of policies and procedures.
Detailed Work Activities
Essential job duties may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics.   • Maintains the County's public buildings and facilities in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Cleans and disinfects offices and public meeting rooms.
  • Scours disinfects all surfaces and restocks restroom materials.
  • Dusts and waxes fixtures and furniture.
  • Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes, and/or buffs floors.
  • Washes walls and windows as needed.
  • Disposes of waste and soiled articles.
  • Replenishes work materials and supplies as needed.
  • Vacuums and shampoos carpets.
  • Maintains and stores tools and equipment used in daily operation in an orderly manner.
  • Prepares rooms for public meetings, unlocks doors, sets up chairs and public address system.
  • Cleans up after public meetings and secures building.
  • Monitors in a watch person capacity the activities in public buildings while working.
  • Changes light bulbs, temporarily repairs restroom facilities such as toilets, faucets, etc. on an as needed basis.
  • Secures doors, windows and grounds.
  • Monitors building for damage, wear and tear, and/or vandalism, and reports to building maintenance.
  • Collect and remove trash, leaves and other debris in and around entries and surrounding grounds.
  • Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Sufficient formal and/or informal education at a level necessary for successful performance of duties, supplemented with one (1) year work experience as a Custodian or equivalent position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Requires:
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of uses and operation of basic hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of ground maintenance, basic equipment and techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic construction and maintenance methods and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job.
  • Ability to read and write at a level required for successful job performance and some full time work experience.
  • Ability to use a variety of custodial equipment and materials as well as operate and maintain a variety of maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those connected in the course of work.

Selection Process:

Condition of Employment:

ELIGIBILITY:
Regular Permanent Full-Time Employees : Eligible for a comprehensive range of benefits

Paid annual leave:
Vacation:
1-5 years of continuous service: 15 working days per year; 6-10 years of continuous service: 20 working days per year; 11-15 years of continuous service: 25 working days per year; 16 years or higher of continuous service: 30 working days per year. Note - Newly hired employees shall be entitled to use their accrued vacation leave subject to totally accrued hours available.
Sick Leave:
1 day of sick leave with pay for each month of service from the date of employment. Note - Sick leave may be used upon accrual.
Holidays:
13 working days each year.
Floating Holidays:
