Custodial Maintenance Worker

Under general and limited supervision, perform a wide variety of custodial maintenance duties to provide a clean, orderly and safe environment in public buildings. Performs cleaning, housekeeping, and light maintenance of assigned space.

This position exercises no supervision over other employees.

Important and essential duties include:

  • Sweep, vacuum and mop floors.
  • Dust and clean offices and other work areas.
  • Collect and remove waste.
  • Clean & restock restrooms.
  • Strip and wax floors.
  • Move or lift furniture, boxes, and other materials.
  • Open and close the facility for use and secure the facility for closing.
  • Operate carpet extractor machine and buffers to polish floors.
  • Operate a City vehicle or personal vehicle to travel between City facilities in order to complete assigned work.

Other job related duties include:

  • Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Tools, chemicals, materials, methods, and best practices used in custodial operations.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions of custodial operations.
  • Proper use and care of a variety of tools, materials, and equipment common to custodial operations.

Skill to:

  • Operate a variety of custodial equipment including vacuum cleaner, carpet machine, and buffer.

Ability to:

  • Maintain a schedule of cleaning and work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and training guidelines:

Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

Experience: Experience in custodial work is preferred.

Education/Training: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance is required.

License or Certificate: A current valid Texas driver's license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.

Special requirements:

Exposure to noise, outdoors, vibration, and confining work spaces.

Exposure to chemicals and mechanical and electrical hazards.

Ability to travel to different sites.
