Job Summary

Responsible for the administration of anesthesia and anesthesia-related care in (1) Pre‑Anesthetic preparation and evaluation; (2) Anesthesia induction, maintenance and emergence; (3) Post‑Anesthesia Care; (4) Peri‑Anesthetic and clinical support functions. Works collaboratively under the anesthesiologist and the overall direction of the OR Manager, Director of Surgical Services and Vice President of Patient Care Services.

Education

Graduate of a Nurse Anesthesia Educational Program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthetist.

  • Current licensure to practice as a CRNA in the state of Missouri
  • BLS certification

  • PALS certification

Core Responsibilities

  • Maintains the standards of anesthesia care and implements the related policies and procedures of the medical center and the Surgery department.
  • Organizes and sets priorities when performing anesthesia duties. Performs psychological evaluations to assist in the development of rehabilitation plans for outpatients and inpatients.
  • Reviews and follows the anesthesiologist’s plan of care, including the pre‑anesthetic assessment and evaluation, anesthetic type and risk classification. Reviews the patient’s current health status and medical history, including pertinent lab work before administering any anesthetic. Refers any questions/concerns to the supervising anesthesiologist and ensures they are notified of induction and emergence.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in all modes of administering general anesthesia. Competent to perform and/or monitor any procedure involving regional anesthesia, including labor epidural analgesia. Administers the anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, and fluids necessary to manage the anesthetic, to maintain the patient’s physiologic homeostasis, and correct abnormal responses. Manages emergence and recovery from anesthesia by administering medications, fluids, or ventilator support to maintain homeostasis, alleviate pain and side effects, or prevent or manage complications. Responds to emergency situations with airway management, emergency fluids or drugs, or basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques.
  • Checks all anesthesia equipment, e.g., gas machines, monitors, etc., prior to use to ensure integrity and documents troubleshooting. Provides a comfortable environment, maintains patient dignity, and identifies unsafe situations for reporting. Confers with surgeon/supervising anesthesiologist regarding positioning. Adheres to department policies, procedures, and standards for technical skills, including monitoring equipment, drawing ABGs, hanging blood, etc., and is competent in performance of technical skills. Ensures a “Time Out” occurs with active participation from the OR team.
  • Reports pertinent patient data, observations, and reactions to supervising anesthesiologist and documents observations accurately. Notifies supervising anesthesiologist and surgeon of any undue responses, e.g., hypotension, cardiac dysrhythmias, etc., and assists as needed. Provides legible documentation of anesthesia care, patient responses, and relevant times; ensures co‑signing of anesthetic record; completes anesthesia patient charges consistently. Reports specific patient data to appropriate health care providers, e.g., OR circulators, PACU.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to perform safe and effective patient care and interaction with all age groups. Evaluates age‑appropriate motor skills and psychological norms, recognizes patient development, uses interview/communication techniques appropriate to age, assesses safety needs, and employs appropriate sized equipment. Completes age‑specific newsletters and associated tests.
  • Provides a clean and safe patient environment/work area. Keeps OR room organized, removes and stores all equipment properly, and participates in the “WHO” checklist.
