Overview

Provides anesthesia services, including general, regional, and monitored anesthesia care to patients. This includes induction of anesthesia, maintenance at required levels, support of life functions during anesthesia, recording of events, recognition and corrective action for abnormal patient responses, and professional observation and resuscitative care until vital functions are regained. Also participates in pre-anesthesia and post-anesthesia activities and collaborates with the surgeon and team as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provides anesthesia services (general, regional, and monitored anesthesia care) and manages induction, maintenance, and emergence of anesthesia; records pertinent events and responds to abnormal patient responses; provides resuscitative care until restoration of vital functions.
  • Performs pre-anesthesia duties: ensures pre-anesthetic examination by a physician, verifies relevant tests and thorough assessment, reviews patient condition prior to induction, and checks readiness and sterility of equipment.
  • Performs post-anesthesia duties: remains with the patient until safe transfer of care, advises post-anesthetic staff of problems, administers post-operative analgesia in collaboration with the surgeon, and monitors for anesthesia-related complications.
  • Responsible for narcotic accounting and distribution.
  • Responds to life-threatening and respiratory emergencies, establishes and maintains an airway under physician direction, and assists with difficult IV insertions when requested and available.
  • May administer anesthesia under the supervision of the operating surgeon. May provide labor analgesia in the Birth Day Center.
  • Maintains knowledge of scientific theory, research findings, current practice, and applicable standards; may participate in departmental and ASC improvement processes when appropriate.
  • Performs patient positioning and transporting duties requiring lifting and pushing/pulling, using proper technique.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care and interprets information to meet age-specific needs as described in department policies and procedures.

Licensure, Registration, And/or Certification Required

  • Registered Nurse license issued by the state of practice.
  • Nurse Anesthetist certification (CRNA) issued by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber license issued by the state of practice.
  • Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.
  • PALS certification (to be obtained within 6 months unless not required by department leader).
  • ACLS certification (to be obtained within 6 months unless not required by department leader).
  • NRP certification (to be obtained within 6 months unless not required by department leader).

Education Required

  • Master's Degree in Nursing.

Experience Required

  • No experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Must be able to fulfill department schedule needs, which may include 24/7 call and weekend coverage.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions

  • Must have functional vision and hearing.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist; lift up to 20 lbs over the head; carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance.
  • Push/pull with 30 lbs of force; perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs with a second person present.
  • Must wear gloves, goggles, and gowns as needed; may be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, radiation, and blood and body fluids hazards.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders, and twist frequently during work shift; operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
