AirNexis Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on developing innovative therapies for patients with respiratory diseases. The company is advancing a licensed late-stage asset with the potential to address significant unmet needs in the respiratory therapeutics landscape.
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, AirNexis is building a focused, high-caliber organization with an emphasis on disciplined execution, scientific innovation, and efficient development of its clinical-stage programs.
About the Role
AirNexis Therapeutics is seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to help lead and further build the Company's accounting function during an important stage of growth and development.
Reporting to the VP, Finance and Accounting, the Controller will have broad responsibility for the Company's day-to-day accounting operations, financial close and reporting, accounting policies and procedures, and internal financial controls, with particular emphasis on preparing the Company for SEC reporting and the standards expected of a public company. This individual will lead the Company through its first external audit, design and document internal control over financial reporting consistent with SOX 404, and build the close discipline, technical accounting documentation, and audit trail that a registration statement and ongoing SEC reporting will require. In doing so, the Controller will establish a scalable, audit-ready accounting infrastructure appropriate for a growing clinical-stage biotechnology company.
The ideal candidate is a technically strong accounting professional who is equally comfortable operating at a detailed level and partnering with senior leadership. This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys being close to the business, bringing rigor and discipline to the accounting function, and helping build processes that can scale with the Company's development.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare quarterly and annual GAAP financial statements, including footnote disclosures, by deadlines, and support the VP of Finance on investor and Board reporting.
- Support the company through its first audit, the prepared-by-client process, defend accounting positions, and coordinate with the auditors on quarterly reviews and annual audits.
- Lead SEC readiness by assembling historical financial information, disclosures, and audit trail that a Form S-1 will demand.
- Own technical accounting research and implementation of new accounting standards, and write technical memos that support the Company's financial statements.
- Design and document the internal control environment, and build policy and control documentation that SOX 404 will require.
- Own monthly and quarterly close, including the calendar, reconciliation set, and the review structure.
- Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts, and administer the accounting stack, including QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, Ramp, Justworks, and Carta.
- Own accounts payable, expense, payroll, and accrual accounting, including CRO and CDMO accruals.
- Own equity and stock-based compensation accounting, and reconcile equity ledger to Carta.
- Review income tax provision, returns, and related compliance prepared by tax advisors.
- Support ad hoc projects as they arise.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CPA license required.
- 10+ years of experience in SEC reporting or public accounting.
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP and SEC rules and regulations.
- Experience preparing or auditing 10-K, 10-Q, and 8-K filings.
- Hands-on experience running the month-to-month accounting function.
- Extensive experience writing technical accounting memos.
- Extensive experience with SOX implementation, testing, and remediation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain complex accounting to non-finance stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience at a Big 4 or large regional public accounting firm.
- Prior experience at a small-cap or mid-cap public company.
- Experience with ERP implementation.
- Prior experience managing tax function.
