Controls Engineer | 0–5% Travel | Multiple Levels

Dayton Metropolitan Area • Posted Yesterday
Onsite Full Time Automation Machinery Manufacturing

If you enjoy custom automation but don’t enjoy spending half your life on the road, this is a pretty unique opportunity.

We’re working with a long-established custom machine builder in the Dayton area that is adding multiple Controls Engineers to its team. They’re open to engineers at different stages of their careers, from someone with a few years of hands-on controls experience who wants to continue developing, through more experienced Controls Engineers who can take ownership of projects independently.

You’ll get the technical variety and project exposure that comes with custom equipment while traveling very little. The company has dedicated field service teams that handle the majority of customer-site work, keeping Controls Engineering travel around 0–5%.

The role is roughly 70–80% controls/software and 20–30% electrical design, working primarily with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell. Depending on experience level, you’ll have the opportunity to get involved throughout the project lifecycle, from controls design and programming through equipment build, debugging, testing and FAT.

What you'll be working on

  • Allen-Bradley PLC programming using Studio 5000 / RSLogix
  • HMI development and programming
  • Electrical controls design using AutoCAD Electrical, including schematics, panel layouts and I/O
  • VFDs, motors, sensors, instrumentation and industrial networking
  • Equipment involving pumps, valves, pressure, flow, temperature and other fluid/process controls
  • New equipment as well as rebuilds, upgrades and custom applications
  • Working alongside mechanical, electrical and manufacturing teams from design through finished equipment

What they're looking for

The biggest thing is someone with a real foundation in industrial controls who wants to be involved beyond maintenance and troubleshooting.

Ideally, you'll have:

  • 2–3+ years of relevant controls/automation engineering experience
  • Hands-on PLC programming experience, ideally Allen-Bradley/Rockwell
  • Exposure to HMI programming/development
  • Experience reading and working with electrical schematics; electrical design / AutoCAD Electrical experience is a plus
  • Experience around automated machinery, manufacturing equipment, systems integration or similar
  • Experience programming, debugging or testing controls systems
  • Exposure to process controls, instrumentation, pneumatics, hydraulics or fluid-handling equipment is a plus

Why this one is different

Beyond the 0–5% travel, the team generally operates around a normal 40-hour workweek and offers flexibility around when you start and finish your day.

There’s also room to grow based on where you are in your career. For someone earlier in their Controls Engineering career, there’s an opportunity to continue developing across PLC/HMI programming, electrical design and complete machine controls projects.

For a more experienced engineer, there’s the opportunity to take greater ownership of projects, and longer term there is potential for the right person to move toward Controls Engineering leadership/management.
