Employment Type
W-2, Full-Time with Benefits

Most Controller openings ask you to run a clean close. This one asks you to help rebuild what "close" even means. We're hiring Controllers who've owned the monthly close end-to-end and look at the manual parts with an instinct to automate, not accept. In our pursuit of achieving a real-time continuous close, we have brought down our close from T+10 to T+2. We’re hiring Controllers that can improve this further. If you've spent your career running closes and the slow parts still bother you — keep reading.

About the Role

We're not hiring a Controller who can also work with AI tools. We're hiring a builder who can also run a clean, audit-ready monthly close. That distinction is the most important thing to understand about this role.

The Controller owns the monthly close across a portfolio of growth-stage clients as part of a pod. You partner daily with the CFO Partner on your pod — they own the client relationship, you own the books behind it — and you report to our Head of Delivery. You work alongside peer Controllers across the company.

This is Controller work done at a different scale. Multiple clients, AI-native tooling that is still being built, and a standard that clients experience as excellent. You are not running the same close you've always run. You are shaping what the next close looks like — for your pod and for every pod that comes after.

Core Accountabilities

Monthly Close Ownership

You own the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of the monthly close across your client portfolio. Accruals, reconciliations, journal entries, and ledger health are your seat. Close runs on schedule; when something is off, you find it before the CFO Partner or the client does.

Technical Accounting & Reporting

You deliver GAAP-accurate financial statements. Revenue recognition where it matters, accounting memos when the treatment is non-obvious, and audit readiness as a default posture rather than an annual scramble. You can defend your reasoning cleanly in a review and explain it to a founder without hiding behind jargon.

Build the Augmented Close

You are not just a consumer of Till's augmented delivery model — you help build it. You identify where the close is still slow, manual, or inconsistent and partner with our engineering team to design the next layer of automation. You bring a Controller's eye for what should be automated, what should stay human, and where AI can compress a five-day close to a two-day one. You ship feedback, not complaints. You prototype workflows, document what works, and raise the bar for what every pod at Till can deliver.

Pod Collaboration & Client Delivery

You work in partnership with the CFO Partner on your pod. The CFO Partner owns the client relationship; you own the books behind it. You surface accounting issues that need client attention early, with a recommendation, and without drama. When the moment calls for you to speak directly to a client, you communicate clearly and confidently.

Systems & Process Rigor

ERP fluency — NetSuite, Sage, or equivalent production ERP, with awareness of QuickBooks. Process documentation that actually works, where someone else can pick it up and run it. What you build for one client gets reusable across pods. You treat process debt as real debt.

What Success Looks Like (Year One)

  • Close runs on schedule and on spec across your client portfolio — accurate, audit-ready, trusted by your CFO Partner and by your clients.
  • Accounting issues surface early, with recommendations — no surprises for your pod or for leadership.
  • Books are audit-ready as a default state, not a once-a-year project.
  • AI-native tools are integrated into daily close practice — not experimentation, but operating rhythm.
  • At least one close, reconciliation, or reporting improvement you identified and shipped has been adopted by another pod at Till.
  • Pod collaboration is strong; you and the CFO Partner on your pod work in rhythm, not in series.
  • You have an active voice in how the delivery function operates — a peer who makes the whole team better, not just your own pod.

Who You Are

Required

  • Has owned a full monthly close end-to-end at a $5–50M company, with direct management of accounting staff. This is a non-negotiable requirement. Title can be Controller, Accounting Manager, or equivalent — what matters is that the close stopped with you and that you led the people running it.
  • Strong technical accounting. GAAP, reconciliations, accruals, and close process design. You can write a clean accounting memo when the treatment isn't obvious and defend it in a review.
  • ERP fluency. NetSuite, Sage, or equivalent production ERP experience. QuickBooks awareness required; QuickBooks-only backgrounds will not clear the bar on their own.
  • Builder signal, not maintainer signal. You can point to a close, reconciliation, or reporting process you built or materially improved — not just one you inherited and ran. You've re-architected something that was broken.
  • Growth-stage experience. You've worked in lean finance teams (1–5 people), built process where none existed, and are comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Obsessed and curious about AI. You already use AI tools daily in your own work — not because someone told you to — but because you can't help it. You follow what's happening at the frontier, experiment when new models drop, and have informed opinions on what's hype versus what's real. This role is impossible without that instinct.
  • Active contributor to tooling and workflow improvement. You are a systems thinker who can point to a close step, reconciliation, reporting workflow, or automation you helped design or improve — even informally. You don't need to be technical, but you need to be the kind of operator who looks at a manual process and asks *why are we still doing this by hand?*

Strongly Valued

  • CPA or equivalent professional credential
  • ERP implementation or optimization experience (NetSuite, Sage, or similar)
  • Audit preparation and management experience — managed audits, not just participated in them
  • M&A integration experience
  • Multi-entity or multi-client exposure — you've held accuracy across more than one set of books at a time
  • SaaS, professional services, or other growth-stage industry exposure

How to Think About This Role

This role attracts Controllers who see the close as a system to be shaped, not a ritual to be performed. The Controller who thrives here knows the technical work cold — and is genuinely energized by finding the next manual step to remove. Technical rigor earns the right to automate; it doesn't replace the need to own accuracy, timeliness, and the integrity of what leaves the pod.

If your strongest work has been maintaining what someone else built — if you're most comfortable running a close exactly the way you've always run it, if imperfect tools frustrate you instead of interest you, if you're looking for a Controller seat where the process is already solved — this probably isn't the right fit.

But if you've always done your best work when you could shape the system you were running, when "we've always done it this way" was never a good enough answer, when you understood that excellent work means the books close cleanly and the next close is a little easier than the last one — we want to talk.
