Director, Insurance Accounting · New York, NY

Our client, a life insurance group, is hiring a Director of Insurance Accounting to run operations accounting for its insurance companies.

Responsibilities

• Lead the team handling statutory reporting, premium and operational accounting, cash management and daily reconciliations.
• Own the quarterly and annual statutory statement filings, including state-specific requirements.
• Act as the technical authority on statutory accounting: research new guidance, adopt new standards and advise on the accounting for new products and transactions.
• Serve as lead contact for external audits, regulatory audits and state insurance examinations, and prepare the audited statements and disclosures.
• Oversee banking and third-party administrator relationships, including annual audits of administrators.
• Work with the investment accounting team on intercompany settlements, investment income allocation and consolidated reporting.
• Build and maintain internal controls over insurance operations accounting.
• Manage and coach the finance team: set goals, delegate and handle performance.

Requirements

• 8+ years in the life insurance industry; multi-entity insurance or audit of insurance companies experience strongly preferred.
• Accounting or finance degree required; CPA preferred.
• Deep knowledge of statutory accounting, with the ability to research issues and reach technical conclusions.
• Working knowledge of GAAP for life insurers, including reinsurance and treaty settlements.
• Experience with GL systems and control design across multiple entities; insurance accounting systems a plus.
• Comfortable working with actuaries on reserves and assumption changes.
• Proven ability to manage people, processes and projects.
• Works well across locations and in a matrixed organization.
• Clear written and spoken communication, including presenting to senior leaders and outside parties.
