Build the Future of Accounting With Us

This is not your typical Controller role.

If you think a Controller's job ends at closing the books and making sure everything ties out, this isn't that job.

We're the combination of two mature, successful construction firms serving the multi-family and single-family industries, building an AI-forward organization. We're looking for an experienced accounting leader who has run a Controller's function before and wants to help us rethink what Accounting can be.

You'll lead our seven-person Accounting team and work directly with the CFO, Director of Business Intelligence, Operations, Project Management, and leaders across the company. You'll make sure the numbers are right—and help us understand what they mean, why they matter, and what to do about them.

Role Snapshot

  • Reports to: Chief Financial Officer
  • Direct reports: Six-person team across Accounting, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable
  • Location: Nashville, TN — on-site
  • Schedule: Full-time, Monday–Friday, with extended hours as business needs require
  • Travel: 0–10%, to visit other offices and team members as needed
  • Systems: Acumatica (ERP/GL), Microsoft 365

You've Done the Controller Job. Now Help Us Rebuild It.

You've owned a month-end close, built and defended a WIP schedule, managed an external audit, and led an accounting team. You may be a Controller today, an Assistant Controller or Director of Accounting ready to run the function, or a Controller at a larger company who wants more influence and less bureaucracy.

What sets you apart isn't the title—it's that you've already done the work and you're ready to redesign how it gets done. If you understand accounting deeply, can analyze a business, communicate beyond Finance, and get excited about building something better, we want to meet you.

What You'll Do

  • Lead financial reporting and close. Own month-end close, multi-entity consolidation, and GAAP financial reporting—on tight deadlines, without compromising accuracy.
  • Integrate two accounting functions into one. Lead the combination of two companies' charts of accounts, close processes, intercompany activity, policies, and systems into a single scalable Accounting function.
  • Own WIP and project performance. Prepare and defend the monthly WIP schedule, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, and job cost reporting. Use WIP as a window into the business—partner with Project Management and Operations on margins, cost-to-complete, change orders, and project risk.
  • Lead planning and forecasting. Coordinate the annual plan and provide the CFO and Director of Business Intelligence with timely, accurate data to support cash management, forecasting, and decisions.
  • Protect financial integrity. Design and maintain strong internal controls, lead the annual external audit, and coordinate tax compliance with outside advisors.
  • Develop the team. Lead a six-person team across Accounting, AP, and AR, building a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Transform Accounting with AI and automation. Identify what should stop being done manually, redesign processes, and automate workflows—reconciliations, AP, reporting, close checklists—putting AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Gemini to practical, well-controlled use.
  • Be a business partner. Turn financial information into insight and action for leaders across the company.

What You Must Bring

  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience , including 3+ years as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager with direct responsibility for a team
  • Construction industry accounting experience — you have personally prepared and owned WIP schedules, job costing, and percentage-of-completion (over-time) revenue recognition under ASC 606
  • Ownership of a full month-end close , including multi-entity accounting, intercompany transactions, and consolidation
  • Experience managing an external audit and designing and maintaining internal controls
  • Demonstrated people leadership — you have hired, developed, and held accountable a team of accounting professionals
  • Strong technical GAAP knowledge and a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Hands-on experience with a construction ERP / general ledger system and advanced Microsoft Excel skills

Preferred, but not required:

  • CPA or CMA
  • Acumatica (ERP/GL) experience
  • Experience integrating two companies' accounting functions, or leading an ERP implementation or migration
  • Multi-family or single-family homebuilding experience
  • FP&A, business analysis, or data/BI experience alongside your accounting background
  • Practical experience using AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or Gemini to improve accounting or finance work

How You Think

  • Analytical, curious, and eager to understand why the numbers look the way they do
  • Thinks beyond the accounting department and understands the broader business
  • Naturally asks, “Why do we still do it this way?”
  • Excited about AI and automation, while balancing innovation with strong controls
  • Communicates confidently with Operations and other non-Finance leaders
  • Willing to challenge assumptions—constructively
  • Enjoys developing people and building high-performing teams
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and energized by the opportunity to build

We care about both the right experience and the right mindset: you've done this work before, and you're ready to do it better.

What You'll Build

You won't simply inherit an Accounting department, you'll help transform it. Success looks like:

  • One integrated Accounting function across both companies
  • A faster, more efficient close
  • Greater visibility into WIP, margins, costs, and performance
  • Strong controls without unnecessary bureaucracy
  • Less manual work and more meaningful analysis
  • Practical AI and automation throughout Accounting
  • An Accounting team that operates as a strategic partner, not just a reporting function

Why This Role?

The playbook isn't completely written yet. You'll lead an established team, work closely with senior leadership, influence how the business uses financial information, and help build an Accounting function designed for the future.

You need to be a strong, experienced Controller. You also need to be curious, analytical, and excited to build.

Bring your accounting knowledge. Bring your curiosity. Bring your ideas.

Let's build what's next.
