Job Summary:
The Controller is responsible for managing the company's core accounting operations, with a primary focus on executing a timely and accurate monthly and quarterly financial close across the company's global operations and overseeing inventory accounting. This role partners closely with the Senior Director, Accounting to ensure consolidated financial statements are prepared in accordance with US GAAP, that inventory is properly valued and controlled, and that accounting processes and internal controls operate effectively. The Controller is also a hands-on people leader, responsible for supervising, developing, and mentoring the day-to-day accounting staff.
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Lead and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process, including preparation and review of journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations to ensure timely and accurate completion.
- Prepare and distribute monthly financial statements and supporting close packages in accordance with US GAAP, and present results to the Senior Director, Accounting and Chief Financial Officer.
- Oversee the preparation of consolidated financial statements, including intercompany eliminations and multi-entity consolidations across the company's global operations, including multi-currency accounting.
- Maintain and enforce close calendars and checklists; monitor progress against milestones and proactively escalate delays or material issues.
- Review and approve journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring proper support, accuracy, and adherence to company accounting policies.
- Coordinate with the FP&A team to provide close results and variance explanations that support management reporting.
- Continuously assess and improve close processes, timelines, and controls to drive greater efficiency and accuracy.
- Oversee inventory accounting, including standard costing, cost of goods sold, inventory valuation, and reserve analysis (excess and obsolescence).
- Partner with supply chain, manufacturing, and operations teams to ensure inventory transactions are accurately and timely recorded in the ERP system.
- Manage periodic physical inventory counts and cycle count programs; investigate and resolve variances.
- Ensure appropriate accounting treatment and cutoff for inventory-related transactions, including write-offs, obsolescence charges, and standard cost updates.
- Support the annual external audit and quarterly reviews by preparing audit schedules and coordinating with auditors on a timely basis.
- Assist with the SOX program, including documentation, testing, and remediation of key accounting and inventory-related internal controls.
- Supervise, develop, and mentor accounting staff; provide regular coaching and performance feedback and support career development.
- Assign and prioritize work across the accounting team to meet close deadlines and operational needs.
- Assist with the preparation of footnotes, schedules, and supporting documentation for SEC filings and other regulatory reports.
- Partner with the Senior Director, Accounting on ad hoc projects, process improvements, and special analyses as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA required.
- 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience; public accounting experience preferred.
- Demonstrated experience leading a financial close process, including multi-entity consolidations.
- Experience in inventory accounting, including standard costing and reserve analysis.
- Knowledge of US GAAP as it relates to inventory, cost accounting, and consolidation.
- SOX compliance and internal controls experience.
- Proficiency in NetSuite and Microsoft Office/Excel (advanced Excel required).
- Strong supervisory and team leadership skills, with experience managing and developing accounting staff.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, global environment and manage multiple priorities under deadline pressure.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Healthcare, medical device, or life sciences industry experience
- Experience with ERP inventory modules and standard cost systems
- Big 4 or regional public accounting background
- Experience supporting international operations and multi-currency accounting
