Controller – Commercial General Contractor | NE Washington, DC (Onsite)
Our client is a fast-growing commercial general contractor in Washington, DC, known for impactful, community-focused construction projects. With roughly $200M in revenue and a team that has grown by more than 50% in the past year, they’re bringing more functions in-house and building a finance organization that can scale with the business.
They’re looking for a Controller to serve as the hands-on #2 to the VP of Finance. You’ll own day-to-day accounting operations and turn complex data into clear, actionable reporting for senior leadership. You’ll also develop a team that’s ready to grow alongside the company. This is a highly visible role with a real path to a Director-level position as the business expands.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close, including financial statements, reporting packages, balance sheet reconciliations, and review of journal entries and accruals
- Oversee job costing, WIP reporting, over/underbilling schedules, revenue recognition, AIA requisitions, and owner billings
- Present financial results to senior leadership, explaining variances, margin trends, and project risk indicators, and recommending corrective actions
- Lead and develop a team of six, including AP, staff accounting, and project accountants, by setting clear expectations, coaching, and building accountability
- Strengthen internal controls, payment governance, segregation of duties, and fraud prevention, including review of lien waivers, COIs, Positive Pay, and ACH activity
- Oversee cash reporting, short-term cash forecasting, AR aging, and retainage to drive working capital discipline
- Partner with Operations and project teams as a trusted resource on job cost and billing questions
- Improve processes, automation, and dashboarding across the ERP, project management, and payment systems
- Support the annual audit with accurate schedules, reconciliations, and documentation
WHAT YOU BRING
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or Master’s preferred but not required
- 10+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including people leadership
- Construction accounting experience strongly preferred, including WIP, job costing, and percentage-of-completion; backgrounds in manufacturing, architecture, engineering, or construction consulting will also be considered
- Confidence presenting to and partnering with senior leadership
- Hands-on approach paired with the ability to coach, mentor, and build scalable processes
- Strong attention to detail, sound business judgment, and advanced Excel skills
- Sage Intacct and Procore experience is a plus; experience with Ramp or Microsoft Copilot is also helpful
A strong Assistant Controller who is ready to step up and take full ownership of the function is encouraged to apply.
WHY THIS ROLE
- High visibility with the leadership team and clear upward mobility
- Opportunity to build processes and develop a team, not just maintain them
- High-performing, collaborative culture where people take real pride in their work
- Meaningful, community-focused projects
COMPENSATION & DETAILS
- $150,000–$180,000 base salary plus 5–10% annual bonus
