Position Overview

A growing organization in the media and broadcasting industry is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its accounting function and oversee the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of financial reporting. This is a highly visible, hands-on leadership role for a strong accounting professional who can balance technical accounting expertise with day-to-day operational oversight. The ideal candidate will be a CPA with a strong accounting foundation, preferably including experience in public accounting, along with the ability to operate effectively in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead all aspects of the accounting function, including general ledger, month-end and year-end close, financial reporting, reconciliations, and accounting operations.
• Oversee the preparation of accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
• Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and maintain appropriate accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
• Manage and develop the accounting team while ensuring clear accountability and efficient workflows.
• Review complex journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and financial statement activity.
• Coordinate the annual audit process and serve as a primary liaison with external auditors.
• Partner with senior leadership and finance teams to provide financial insights and support business decision-making.
• Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting processes, and financial reporting procedures.
• Identify opportunities to automate and streamline accounting processes and improve close timelines.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and other financial initiatives as needed.
• Assist with technical accounting matters and implementation of new accounting standards.
• Partner cross-functionally with operations and other business leaders throughout the organization.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
• Active CPA required.
• Public accounting experience strongly preferred.
• Progressive accounting experience with prior Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Director, or similar leadership experience.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and month-end close processes.
• Proven experience managing and developing accounting professionals.
• Strong Excel and financial systems skills.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Media, broadcasting, entertainment, advertising, digital media, or another related industry background is a plus.
• Must be comfortable working onsite in Chicago.
