Our client , an advanced energy technology organization developing next-generation power systems, is looking for a Control Systems Specialist . This role will support the design, construction, programming, commissioning, and operation of advanced control and data acquisition systems used in research, testing, and experimental facilities.
Location: Everett, WA - Onsite
Duration: 12 months
Compensation: $37 - $74 per hour.
Additional Compensation: This position is not eligible for bonus or incentive compensation.

Summary:
The Control Systems Specialist will design, build, program, troubleshoot, and maintain electrical control, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems supporting complex laboratory and industrial test equipment. This role works closely with engineers, scientists, operators, and technicians to integrate field devices, develop LabVIEW applications, support system commissioning, and ensure the safe and reliable operation of advanced test facilities. The ideal candidate brings extensive hands-on experience with electrical controls, industrial instrumentation, control panel construction, and National Instruments technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, build, wire, test, and troubleshoot electrical control panels and instrumentation systems for laboratory and industrial test facilities.
  • Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot LabVIEW-based control and data acquisition applications.
  • Configure and integrate sensors, instrumentation, heaters, variable frequency drives, control valves, motors, and other field devices.
  • Support system startup, shakedown, commissioning, testing, calibration, and troubleshooting in research and development environments.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, Process Flow Diagrams, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, and instrumentation drawings.
  • Develop operator interfaces and data acquisition architectures that provide reliable monitoring and control of test systems.
  • Diagnose electrical, instrumentation, communications, and control system issues during installation, commissioning, and operation.
  • Develop and maintain wiring diagrams, panel layouts, I/O lists, calibration records, operating documentation, and test procedures.
  • Assist with developing control system requirements and specifications based on engineering requirements and process documentation.
  • Evaluate commercially available controls hardware, instrumentation, and data acquisition solutions for technical suitability and scalability.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to automation, controls, instrumentation, testing, and data acquisition.
  • Follow established electrical and laboratory safety practices while promoting a strong culture of safety.
Qualifications:
  • Associate degree, technical certification, trade school training, military technical training, or equivalent hands-on experience in electrical controls, automation, instrumentation, mechatronics, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience building, troubleshooting, commissioning, or maintaining industrial control systems, instrumentation systems, automated equipment, or laboratory test systems.
  • Experience building and wiring electrical control panels from electrical schematics.
  • Experience programming and troubleshooting National Instruments LabVIEW applications and data acquisition systems.
  • Experience integrating instrumentation, sensors, heaters, variable frequency drives, control valves, motors, and other field devices.
  • Experience with industrial instrumentation, automation, electrical controls, or robotics.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and instrumentation drawings.
  • Experience with laboratory or industrial data acquisition hardware and software, including National Instruments systems.
  • Field experience with startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, diagnostics, testing, and calibration of electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent assignments and prioritize work effectively.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to independently resolve complex technical problems and provide timely recommendations.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, scientists, operators, and technicians.
Nice to Have:
  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical, AutoCAD, or similar software used to develop electrical schematics, panel layouts, and control system drawings.
  • Experience with PLC and HMI programming, configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, Profinet, or OPC.
  • Experience designing or supporting UL 508A control panels.
  • Experience with SCADA systems, distributed control systems, or other industrial automation platforms.
  • Experience commissioning first-of-a-kind equipment, prototypes, or research and development test systems.
  • Experience supporting control and data acquisition systems with large numbers of I/O signals.
  • Experience supporting high-temperature process systems or industrial testing facilities.
  • Qualified Electrical Worker certification or equivalent electrical safety training.
  • Journeyman Electrician, Instrument Technician, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or a related technical background.
