As a Construction Underwriter, you'll be at the heart of that mission—joining a team known across the industry for delivering tailored solutions for complex construction risks, including programs with loss sensitive and alternative risk financing structures.What You'll DoAs a Middle & Large Business Construction Underwriter, you'll lead the sales and underwriting process for complex construction accounts, including those with loss sensitive features such as large deductibles, self-insured retentions, and other alternative program structures. You'll partner closely with agents, brokers, and internal stakeholders to deliver sustainable, profitable solutions.Your role will include:Leading underwriting and pricing strategy for complex construction risks, including loss-sensitive and structured programsManaging account stewardship, renewal planning, and retention strategiesEvaluating loss experience, risk controls, and insured financials to support loss-sensitive decision-makingDriving strategic planning and operational excellence across your portfolioIdentifying cross-sell and up-sell opportunities across casualty and related linesCollaborating with a high-performing, results-oriented team in a shared-success cultureWhat Sets This Role ApartExposure to loss-sensitive construction programs and complex risk structuresA seat at the table with underwriting, product, actuarial, and sales leadershipA culture that values innovation over traditionCareer growth aligned to your goals—technical leadership or people leadershipA collaborative, inclusive environment where your expertise and perspective matterWe'll Be a Good Match If You Have:Experience underwriting complex construction casualty risks, including or adjacent to loss-sensitive programsStrong analytical and critical-thinking skills, particularly when evaluating loss history and risk characteristicsFinancial acumen and sound underwriting judgmentA customer-first mindset with a collaborative, relationship-driven approachOwnership mentality with consistent follow-throughAdaptability in a dynamic, evolving marketplaceA desire to learn and grow within Middle & Large Business underwritingQualifications3+ years of construction casualty underwriting experience preferred Experience with loss-sensitive programs, large deductibles, or structured accounts a plusPrior commercial construction carrier underwriting experience requiredProven success building internal and external partnershipsExcellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skillsStrong organizational, analytical, and decision-making abilitiesHigh-energy, entrepreneurial mindset with resilienceTravel: 25%-30% to neighboring statesValid driver's license (company pool car may be provided)Note: Final position title and level will be determined based on the selected candidate's qualifications.Work ArrangementThis role offers a Hybrid work arrangement:Candidates are expected to work at our Hartford office in Brea, CA Tuesday through Thursday if they are not in-market.CompensationThe listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role.

The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.
