About the Role

Senior Professional Engineer / Construction Manager position located in Irvine, CA or Carlsbad, CA. The role leads and oversees construction management of large, multi-disciplinary and moderately complex projects across CDM Smith’s West Pacific Region, working closely with practice leaders, technical delivery managers, and client service leaders to drive growth of CM services and deliver excellence to clients.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with practice leaders, technical delivery managers, and client service leaders to establish a vision for growth of CM services with existing clients.
  • Manage client relationships and stakeholder expectations, serving as the primary point of contact between CDM Smith and all stakeholders.
  • Lead CM: direct and oversee the daily operations of the entire project or program team, providing strategic leadership and direction.
  • Project oversight and coordination: ensure construction activities comply with design specifications, safety standards, and project timelines; monitor site operations, coordinate with contractors, and resolve technical issues throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Control all construction management activities, including CPM scheduling, claims management, project coordination, risk management, and quality management on large complex assignments.
  • Drive CM innovation: leverage innovative tools and methodologies to improve delivery, optimize resources, and enhance quality and safety standards.
  • Represent CDM Smith at professional societies, conference presentations, and publications to share insights and shape industry practices.
  • Quality assurance and control: conduct inspections, review plans, and perform quality tests to ensure materials and workmanship meet required standards.
  • Build and manage the project team, including teaming partners and subconsultants, coordinating their duties and activities as Lead CM.
  • Ensure completion of construction in accordance with contract documents and CDM Smith Quality Standards, establishing processes to reduce cost and risk.
  • Mentor staff and contribute to the firm’s knowledge‑management system.
  • Participate in the recruitment process to grow the team of CM professionals.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Minimum 12 years of relevant experience, or equivalent additional directly related experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Professional Engineering (PE) license.
  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM) certification.
  • Experience leading CM or Resident Engineer roles on $100 million-plus construction projects.

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of computer‑aided design and drafting (CADD) 3D and 4D software and practices.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles of design.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft business software (Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Familiarity with federal, state, and local regulations.

Travel & Location

Position may require up to 100% on-site project work and 20%-40% travel.

Compensation

  • Pay Range: USD 153,462 - 283,878.
