Construction Laborer - Utility Person
Hands-on, dependable, and team-oriented-someone who takes pride in physical work and keeping the city running safely and smoothly.
You'll support the City's water, sewer, and stormwater operations by performing hands-on construction, maintenance, and equipment work that keeps Fort Wayne's infrastructure operating every day.
Key responsibilities include:
- Operating heavy trucks, front-end loaders, and related equipment for utility operations
- Installing, repairing, and maintaining water and sewer infrastructure such as hydrants, mains, valves, and laterals
- Performing construction and repair work using hand and power tools, concrete, mortar, and asphalt
- Completing inspections, pre-trip vehicle checks, and routine equipment maintenance
- Working closely with City crews, assisting with training, and following all safety requirements
What you bring – education and experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience in construction, utilities, or outdoor labor preferred
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in all weather conditions
Preferred certifications:
- CDL Class A (or willingness to obtain; learner's permit required)
- Certified Competent Person: Excavation & Trench
- Confined Space Certification
Technical skills and knowledge:
- Basic math, technical, and communication skills
- Ability to safely use tools, equipment, and vehicles
- Strong safety awareness and ability to follow procedures
