Computer Engineer - Sustaining Engineering

Pay: $70.00 - $75.00 per hour
The Computer Engineer - Sustaining Engineering is responsible for developing, maintaining, and improving automated test systems, manufacturing support software, and validation tools used in the production of FDA-regulated medical devices. This role supports manufacturing operations by ensuring the reliability, compliance, and performance of automated test equipment, software applications, and production support systems. The ideal candidate has strong software engineering experience, expertise with automated test systems, and the ability to troubleshoot complex hardware and software integration issues in a regulated manufacturing environment.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and enhance automated test software using LabVIEW, NI TestStand, Python, and other programming languages.
- Design and implement software solutions that interface with sensors, industrial PCs, DAQ hardware, and automated manufacturing equipment.
- Develop test frameworks, scripts, and utilities to support system validation and manufacturing operations.
- Troubleshoot complex hardware, software, and automated test system issues to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Perform root cause analysis (RCA) and support corrective and preventive action (CAPA) initiatives.
- Support enterprise systems used for product commissioning, configuration management, access control, and backup/recovery.
- Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, quality, and IT teams to resolve complex production and test system issues.
- Develop diagnostic tools and software utilities to improve system performance and identify hidden failure modes.
- Support software verification, validation, and documentation activities in compliance with FDA and quality system requirements.
- Maintain cybersecurity controls, data integrity, audit trails, and system access management for manufacturing support systems.
- Participate in risk assessments, validation activities, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Train manufacturing personnel and test technicians on automated test systems and software tools.
- Support new product introductions and ongoing product lifecycle activities.
- Travel domestically and internationally up to 20% as required.
Job Requirements
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience developing software and supporting automated test systems in a manufacturing environment.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Strong experience with LabVIEW and Python development.
- Experience with NI TestStand or similar automated test frameworks.
- Experience programming in C++, Java, or other high-level programming languages.
- Experience with scripting languages for automation and test development.
- Experience supporting Windows 11 operating systems, industrial PCs, and automated test hardware.
- Experience with GitHub, source control systems, debuggers, and software build environments.
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC) principles.
- Experience troubleshooting complex hardware/software integration issues.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity fundamentals, including access control, data protection, and networked test systems.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a cross-functional environment.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Work Experience
- 3-5 years of experience supporting automated test systems, manufacturing software, or sustaining engineering.
- Experience in medical device, pharmaceutical, or other FDA-regulated manufacturing environments preferred.
- Experience with software validation, GxP, GMP, or FDA quality systems preferred.
- Experience with data integrity principles (ALCOA/ALCOA+), automated manufacturing tools, test equipment calibration, or validation is preferred
