Work on Climate (WoCl) is a leading non-profit focused on mobilizing humanity’s talent to build a regenerative, climate-positive economy.

You probably know us for our online community — the world’s largest climate career and action community — which has helped thousands of people find climate jobs, start companies, and build impactful networks. We’ve been featured in Fast Company, the New York Times, Wired, and more.

Our work is entering a new chapter beyond helping individuals find climate jobs.

We’re now supporting professionals to engage in climate leadership — organizing , mobilizing , and transforming whole sectors and regions toward regenerative futures, through regional chapters of issue-focused work. (Read more about this transition in our announcement post).

About the team

The Community Cultivation Team is responsible for creating a relational community* for our members—enabling career transitions into climate work, sharing crucial industry knowledge, and fostering the connections that help members find jobs, launch climate ventures, or incorporate sustainability into their current roles.

Relationality by David Jay, relationships form when people change one another in ways that persist over time. Unlike transactional environments, relational spaces facilitate deeper connections, creative collaboration, and resilient support networks. Your role will help foster this environment where meaningful change can occur between members.

Our current meeting schedule is weekly on Fridays at 9am PT/12pm ET/6pm CET, with additional asynchronous collaboration throughout the week.

Role summary

We’re seeking community cultivators who can help members feel genuinely at home in the Work on Climate community — not just oriented to the Slack workspace, but connected to the broader climate movement and the professional peers working within it. As WoCl moves from a job-search community toward a field transformation movement, cultivators play a critical role in shaping the culture that makes that shift possible.

During your volunteer term, you’ll steward member interactions, uphold community guidelines, and — more importantly — model the kind of relational, reciprocal behaviour that turns a large online community into a place where people begin to see themselves in a movement.

Time commitment

This role is highly impactful and rewarding, but we want to be upfront that our most successful volunteers dedicate:

• 5 hours/week consistently and consider this a long-term volunteer position
• Attendance at the required weekly team meetings

What will I do?

We see our community moderators as cultivators, because your primary job will be to create a nourishing and caring environment. You’ll be a relationship builder, a resource-finder, and community host.

Your work will directly impact our goal of building a community where members develop a genuine sense of belonging — not just to this Slack workspace, but to the broader climate movement and the professional field they’re working to transform. A cultivator’s role is to help members feel that this place is for them, that their presence here matters, and that they are part of something larger than their individual job search or career transition.

Key responsibilities include:

• Acting as a culture carrier: meeting members where they are, modelling relational alternatives to transactional behaviour, and opening pathways to deeper participation without pressure
• Daily review of most active WoCl channels to spot where members need support or redirection in order embody our community culture
• Observing and analysing community behaviour and trends to surface emerging member needs and inform culture cultivation strategy
• Serving as a community connector who helps members find others with complementary interests or skills and implementing strategies to strengthen connections
• Attending to member form responses (violation reports and requests for help)

What skills and commitment do I need?

You will need to be highly self-motivated and capable of breaking down large tasks into smaller components, prioritizing your work, and identifying when you need help (and asking for it!).

You should be meticulous and have a knack for understanding different perspectives. The most effective candidates will have:

• Interest in leading both day-to-day moderation and supporting long-term improvements to the community guidelines and the team’s cultivation policies
• Excellent individual and group communication skills, with the ability to work with people of different work and communication styles
• Superior critical thinking skills to make nuanced judgments about what content is appropriate in specific contexts
• Empathetic communication style that can translate member needs into concrete solutions
• Ability to identify and implement automation opportunities to streamline processes is a plus

Common Challenges

• Being empathetic, firm, and kind in managing community interactions
• Maintaining consistency between team members’ moderation decisions, even when there isn’t a clear “right” action
• Balancing urgent moderation tasks with long-term community engagement strategies
• Finding the right level of structure requires careful testing and iteration, as too much or too little guidance can both be problematic.
