Code Compliance InspectorThe Code Compliance Inspector helps keep Cortez safe, clean, and orderly by applying the City’s Property Maintenance, Municipal, and Land Use codes fairly and consistently. This full-time, onsite role works Monday–Friday (40 hours/week) and partners closely with the Cortez Police Department and community members.

Key responsibilities include:Investigate complaints and observed violations; document findings and case activityIssue notices, coordinate voluntary compliance, and support enforcement actions within legal parametersCommunicate clearly with residents, merchants, and contractors; prepare written reports and correspondenceUse tools such as database systems (Citizens Serve or similar), GIS mapping, and field technologyRequired qualifications/skills:High school diploma (or equivalent) plus related compliance/code enforcement or law enforcement experience (or equivalent combination)Valid Colorado driver’s license; ability to travel for mandatory trainingWorking knowledge of enforcement principles (including 4th Amendment considerations)Ability to obtain AACE/ICC Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector Certification within 12 monthsApply to bring your judgment, professionalism, and initiative to Cortez.Medical, dental, and vision insurance; life insurance; retirement; and paid vacation and sick leave.Your morning starts in the field, moving through neighborhoods and commercial areas and checking on open cases. You’ll balance scheduled follow-ups with new calls that come in, then capture photos and notes on a phone or camera and update records in the system. Midday often includes conversations at a job site or storefront—explaining next steps, timelines, and options in a calm, respectful way. Back at the office, you’ll organize documentation, map locations in GIS, and coordinate with internal partners as needed. The day wraps with planning tomorrow’s routes and ensuring case files are complete and ready for the next action.
