The COBOL Software Developer III is responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, and supporting business-critical applications built on COBOL and mainframe technologies. This role requires advanced knowledge of COBOL programming, strong analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, high-performance software solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, code, test, debug, and document COBOL programs for business applications.
- Enhance, maintain, and support existing mainframe applications to ensure reliability and performance.
- Participate in system analysis, requirements gathering, and solution design.
- Optimize existing code for efficiency and maintainability.
- Collaborate with business analysts, QA teams, and system administrators to deliver quality software.
- Troubleshoot and resolve production issues in a timely manner.
- Ensure compliance with coding standards, security policies, and best practices.
- Mentor junior developers and provide technical guidance where needed.
- Prepare technical documentation including flowcharts, diagrams, and program specifications.
- Participate in code reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
- 5–7+ years of experience in COBOL programming and mainframe development.
- Proficiency with COBOL, JCL, CICS, VSAM, DB2, and related mainframe utilities.
- Strong understanding of batch and online transaction processing systems.
- Experience with system testing, debugging, and performance tuning.
- Familiarity with source code management tools (Endevor, Changeman, or similar).
- Ability to analyze complex systems and provide innovative solutions.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Experience in financial services, insurance, or government systems is a plus.
