We are seeking a Sr Physician Assistant who willwork with attending physicians, residents, nurses, respiratorytherapists, and others to provide patient care in various intensivecare units, including surgical, burn, and neuro.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Works independently with supervision and medical direction byCritical Care Attending Physicians.
  • Coordinates patient care provided by a multi-disciplinary teamof specialty care practitioners.
  • Obtains medical histories and perform physicalexaminations.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory tests, X-rays, and otherdiagnostic studies.
  • Interprets information from invasive and non-invasivemonitors.
  • Initiates or modifies routine, complex, and emergent medicationregimens and therapies.
  • Performs emergent, urgent, and routine procedures, ifcredentialed to do so.
  • Inserts peripheral and central venous catheters.
  • Inserts pulmonary artery catheters.
  • Inserts temporary transvenous cardiac pacemakers.
  • Inserts chest tubes or performs a thoracentesis.
  • Performs conscious IV sedation.
  • Inserts peripheral arterial catheters.
  • Controls external hemorrhage.
  • Inserts Oral or Naso-gastric tubes.
  • Inserts urinary drainage catheters (Foley catheter).
  • Performs cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR/ACLS).
  • Performs electrical cardioversion. Assists with trachealintubation, cricothyroidotomy, tracheostomy, bronchoscopy, andpercutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG).
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for organizing timeand workload to meet patient, staff, and department need.
  • Serves as an educational and clinical resource to nursing andmulti-disciplinary staff as well as to patients and theirfamilies.

Applicants must have advanced clinical skills andhave demonstrated the ability to apply theoretical concepts as partof a multi-disciplinary health care team providing care to patientsand theirfamilies. Applicants must have the ability to diagnosepatients and to implement a medical care plan for the long andshort-term care of acute and chronic health conditions in theintensive care unit.   • Function with minimal supervision within the scope of theirpractice as part of the critical care teamo Teach and mentor juniorstaff and rotating house-staff.
  • Teach and mentor junior staff and rotating house-staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similarnational certifying body.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in related clinical area andobtained proficiency in area of specialty.
  • Five years related experience preferred.
  • Residency or fellowship programs in area of specialization maysubstitute for some experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience tothe extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas,laboratories, working with research subjects, or involvingcommunity contact requires documentation of immune status againstRubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella(chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received theTdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may includedocumentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicellavaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratorytesting. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases areordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except forthose employees who provide results of blood tests or immunizationdocumentation from their own health care providers. Anyvaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no costin our Occupational Health office.
