Job Summary

The Clinical Staff Pharmacist provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care to patients in a psychiatric hospital setting, ensuring the safe, effective, and appropriate use of medications for mental health conditions. This role involves reviewing and verifying medication orders, monitoring patient responses to psychotropic therapies, and collaborating closely with psychiatrists, nurses, and interdisciplinary teams to optimize treatment outcomes. The pharmacist also educates staff and patients on medication use, manages potential drug interactions and side effects, and ensures compliance with regulatory and safety standards.

Required

• Education: Bachelor of Science (BS) degree or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree
• Experience: 1 year of pharmacy experience
• English proficiency: speaking, reading, writing
• Licensure: Eligible for licensure by Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP); Texas license required within 30 days
• Certifications: Sterile compounding (IV) certification accredited by ACPE; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required within 180 days

Preferred

• Additional 1 year of pharmacist experience

Job Duties

• Perform job responsibilities in accordance with organizational and departmental policies, procedures, performance improvement objectives and environmental/infection control standards as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
• Perform all computer order entry accurately, thoroughly and timely; review and update medication profiles.
• Review medication orders for therapeutic appropriateness, duplications, interactions, overall effectiveness and safety; seek clarification and document interventions.
• Work independently and problem‑solve effectively with minimal supervision; make sound decisions and use good judgment.
• Enforce the formulary system and follow departmental policy when acquiring non‑formulary products; participate in cost‑effective use and selection of pharmaceuticals.
• Communicate drug information verbally and in writing to physicians, nurses, and other staff; assist in patient/family education and counseling regarding drug therapy and side effects; document clinical activities.
• Manage technicians and other supportive personnel; delegate tasks and validate accuracy of medications from the IV lab, central pharmacy or automated dispensing machines; audit and sign out controlled substances per state/federal guidelines.
• Participate in educational programs, in‑services and meetings; take on additional projects as needed.
• Support Pharmacy & Therapeutics initiatives; monitor target drugs for protocol discontinuation, substitution, IV to PO, etc.; gather data and communicate opportunities for improvement; perform therapeutic monitoring and recommend dosage adjustments.
• Perform any other duties as assigned.
