Position Summary

Position: Clinical Pharmacist – Per Diem, Department: Pharmacy, Schedule: Part Time, per Diem.

Responsible for supervising the filling and dispensing of medication orders, ensuring proper handling, usage and storage of drugs. Provides clinical services and drug information to physicians, residents and nurses; conducts drug consultations; participates in quality improvement projects related to pharmacy expertise. Works independently within established pharmacy policies and procedures.

Critical Responsibilities

  • Review and approve all initial and routine medication orders for therapeutic appropriateness and cost effectiveness.
  • Oversee the intravenous admixture area and review all new orders from the sterile products room.
  • Provide drug information and consult with physicians and nurses on drug therapy.
  • Supervise two pharmacy technicians and one to three pharmacy interns in filling, checking unit‑dose carts, inventory control, order interpretation and input into the computer system.
  • Participate in daily patient rounds to advise on pharmacotherapy selection, dosing, pharmacokinetics, toxicity and side effects.
  • Participate in orientation, hiring and training of new personnel, including technicians, interns, students and residents.
  • Participate in inter‑ and intra‑departmental committees to coordinate pharmacy, nursing and physician activities.
  • Interview patients to obtain accurate medical histories, medication lists, adverse reactions and allergies.
  • Assist in investigational drug studies, including protocol design, drug records, inventory control, dosage formulation and patient monitoring.
  • Prepare drug monographs and review drugs for inclusion in the hospital formulary; assist with cost review and adjustments.
  • Precept pharmacy students and residents; conduct in‑service education lectures for staff on drugs, procedures and policies.
  • Assist in formulating and continually updating departmental policies, procedures and pharmacy‑nursing protocols.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Pharmacy from an accredited pharmacy school.
  • 2‑5 years of hospital pharmacy experience.
  • PGY1 residency preferred.

Certifications and Licensure

  • Current registration as a pharmacist in Massachusetts required by hire date.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills to disseminate information to patients, nurses and physicians.
  • Administrative skills for coordinating personnel and pharmacy operations.
  • Teaching skills for preceptorship of pharmacy students.

Compensation

Salary range: $52.40–$75.96 per hour. Compensation is based on education, experience, skills, licenses and market competitiveness.
