Job Summary

The Clinical Nurse II is a registered nurse who works as a full partner on the pediatric cardiovascular surgical team. The role requires the application of nursing processes, adherence to evidence‑based practices, and a commitment to patient, family, and team-centered care. The Clinical Nurse II independently provides patient care across a wide age range, optimizes outcomes, and collaborates with the inter‑professional health‑care team to deliver safe, high‑quality care.

Essential Functions

Employees must abide by all Joint Commission Requirements and perform duties in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.

• Performs all functions of Clinical Nurse I.
• Patient and family centered care: Recognizes the patient or designee as the source of control and engages the patient as a full care partner.
• Manages complex patient‑care assignments appropriate to skill level.
• Builds consensus and resolves conflict in patient‑care contexts.
• Demonstrates the ability to see the big picture and integrates clinical experience to refine practice.
• Engages in problem solving to address complex issues in delivering safe, high‑quality, family‑centered care.
• Ensures the support of systems that promote patient‑centered care.
• Evidence‑Based Practice and Research: Generates clinical questions, searches and evaluates evidence, and applies findings to practice.
• Questions current practice and advocates for policy or procedure revisions when warranted.
• Safety: Minimizes risk of harm to patients, families, providers, and self through effective system and individual performance.
• Serves as a resource person for safety concerns and participates in error analysis and system improvement.
• Continuous Quality Improvement: Utilizes data and QI methods to identify problems and opportunities to improve safety, timeliness, efficiency, effectiveness, and equity.
• Participates in designing, reviewing, and evaluating QI initiatives at the unit level and integrates them into care plans.
• Teamwork: Engages in cooperation, coordination, and collaboration within inter‑ and intra‑professional teams, including virtual teams.
• Utilizes information technology to support decision making, knowledge management, and error prevention.
• Professionalism: Commits to lifelong learning, upholds the ANA Code of Ethics, and engages in professional organizations.
• Leadership: Applies systems thinking, evidence-based problem solving, and decision making to promote effective changes and support the organization’s vision.

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited nursing program; BSN preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years experience as an Operating Room RN, including scrub and circulate; pediatric experience preferred.
• Licensure and certification: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (AHA) within 90 days or RQI Pediatric Advanced Life Support; Registered Nurse, California Board of Registered Nursing; Basic Life Support (AHA) or RQI Basic Life Support.

Knowledge

• Ability to perform all functions of the position at the clinical level.
• Proficient in operation of clinical equipment, computers, and technology relevant to nursing practice.
• Fiscal accountability and resource stewardship in the use of materials, supplies, and equipment.
• Supervisory responsibilities: guiding, assisting, and directing unlicensed assistive personnel in accordance with the California Nurse Practice Act and organization policies.

Pay Range

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary may be influenced by education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and internal equity. Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range: hourly $96.35 to $111.14.
