Job Summary and Qualifications
General Statement of Duties:
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist III is responsible for: performing complex medical laboratory tests for diagnosis and treatment of disease, analyzing and assuming accountability for accurate test results, maintenance of complicated instruments, monitoring quality control and quality assurance programs, assuring compliance with regulations and standards of regulatory agencies, and managing special projects.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Performs specimen processing and testing independently to include moderate and high complexity testing. Analyzes test results and assumes accountability for accuracy.
2. Understands, performs, and practices preventive maintenance on equipment; troubleshoots and takes corrective action. Demonstrates pro-active problem solving skills to include identifying a problem and taking appropriate action; knows when to seek guidance to complete troubleshooting protocol.
3. Understands, performs, and practices quality control management to include running controls, evaluating data, documentation of data, and taking corrective action as required. Communicates any relevant QC information to Supervisor or Manager.
4. Anticipates and evaluates need for new methods, instrumentation, and technology in terms of customer need, cost benefit and revenue generation, and informs management about findings.
5. Assures compliance with accrediting agencies. Acts as a resource to customers both within the department and outside the department.
6. Manages assigned projects to include developing a plan, coordinating necessary resources, setting project timelines, keeping Manager informed of progress, and completing project within established time limits.
Additional Job Functions:
1. Reviews, writes or modifies departmental procedures or policies.
2. Monitors quality control for a specific instrument or methodology and prepares documents for pathologist review; sends and reviews reports, performs correlation studies.
3. Reviews maintenance logs for specific instruments or methodologies.
4. Acts as the point person for on-site inspections; takes part on inspections to other facilities.
5. Designs quality assurance monitors/projects, reports findings, and takes corrective action.
6. Develops programs for section/department orientation, competency and training; validates competency of co-workers.
7. Supports the mission and vision of the Methodist Healthcare System and demonstrates excellent customer service at all times.
8. Understands and is committed to helping the Methodist Healthcare System and its associated facilities achieve its goals.
9. Must learn to comply with System and facility safety policies and rules; must use appropriate safety equipment and procedures at all times; must immediately report all unsafe conditions to supervisors; must be familiar with all safety features of equipment, tools or materials encompassed by job duties; and must check with supervisors (prior to job performance) if there is a question as to the safe procedure to be used for any job function.
10. Adheres to the MHS Code of Conduct and demonstrates ethical behavior as expected by our patients, colleagues and the community. Understands the personal obligation to report any activity that appears to violate applicable laws, rules regulations or the Code of Conduct itself.
11. Completes other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Associates degree required and Bachelor's degree is preferred.
Minimum 5 years experience in Clinical Laboratory setting is required
1. Minimum License and Certificates Required: MT(ASCP), MLS(ASCP), MT(AMT), MT(AAB), CLS(NCA), MT(HEW), MLT(ASCP), MLT(HEW).
Certification is waived for those with 10 + years of lab experience
