Job Title: Clinical Laboratory Science / Medical Technology.

Site: VA Togus, Maine Healthcare System (VA Maine Medical Center)
Location: 1 VA Center, Augusta, ME 04330
Duration: 1 year plus 4 option years. Contract option as well.
Shift Schedule: Rotating shifts including evenings, nights, and weekends. No on-call required.
How Many Shifts Needed Per Month: Coverage across 5 FTE on day, evening, and night shifts. Weekends approximately 1-2 per month per person (may be more based on lab needs).
Credentialing / Onboarding Time: 6 weeks to 8 weeks
License: Any state license works.
Certifications:
  • Nationally certified MT, MLS, or CLS (required)
  • BLS/ACLS
Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant science with completion of an accredited CLS/MT program (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
Experience Needed: 3 years of recent experience across chemistry, urinalysis, blood bank, hematology, coagulation, and microbiology. (Education path C alternative requires 5 years.)
Special Skills Needed:
  • Routine chemistry on automated instrumentation (Abbott Architect ci8200, Abbott Alinity, Advanced Instruments Osmos, Polymedco OC80)
  • Urinalysis (Beckman Coulter, manual methods)
  • Blood bank: cross matching, antibody screening/identification, cell panels, tube and gel technology
  • Hematology/coagulation (Sysmex, ACL Top, Alcor iSed)
  • Microbiology: plating, gram staining, reading/subbing plates, Microscan setup, PCR testing
  • CAP Proficiency Testing participation
  • Fluent English (speak, understand, read, write)
  • VA electronic health record documentation
Responsibilities:
  • Perform patient and QC testing per established protocols across all lab sections.
  • Independently test, evaluate, document, and report patient testing and QC.
  • Identify, document, and resolve collection, processing, testing, or reporting issues.
  • Run routine daily and weekly QC and instrument maintenance.
  • Positively identify patients before collection and samples before testing.
  • Safeguard electronic and paper patient information.
  • Participate in monthly QI meetings and staff meetings (12 hours each annually).
  • Report patient safety events to the COR within 24 hours.
