POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the DON, the Clinical Education & Infection Control Nurse assumes responsibility and accountability for coordinating, scheduling and facilitating training and development for nursing employees, ensuring survey compliance for all licensed areas and oversees the infection surveillance, prevention and outbreak response process. Assists the Director of Nursing to direct health related services for the Nursing Center, Assisted Living and Memory Support units in a Continuing Care Retirement Community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. This list is not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule (developed in coordination with the DON) to include all shifts, all days as needed to train and educate staff
  • Develop and follow a comprehensive infection prevention risk assessment and program, to include surveillance, reporting and nursing assessment and interventions to prevent the most commonly occurring infections in long-term care
  • Coordinates and assists in the development of training programs, research training materials and identify trainers
  • Participates in the interviewing and hiring process for nursing employees
  • Develop, direct and schedule refresher training, as necessary, for assigned staff and licensed professional personnel.
  • Provide staff education during the orientation process to include abuse and neglect, resident rights, privacy standards, etc.
  • Direct, evaluate and supervise resident care and initiate corrective action.
  • Maintains current knowledge base of guidelines for Medicare providers.
  • Provides education for interdisciplinary teams, licensed nurses, and certified nursing assistants.
  • Assist the DON in establishing policies and interpreting those policies according to the standards of nursing practice.
  • Rotates among various clinical services of institution as needed.
  • Participates in community quality assessment and improvements programs.
  • Maintains compliance with all personnel policies, established community policies and procedures, and Federal and State regulations and standards, including but not limited to HIPAA privacy and confidentiality laws.
  • Conducts a quarterly Mock DHEC Survey for Skilled and Assisted Living
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

Educational Requirements and Experience

  • Registered Nurse in the state of South Carolina. Knowledge of Nursing theory and standards of practice.
  • Knowledge of OBRA/Federal/State regulations For Nursing Homes/Assisted Living.
  • Knowledge of basic infection control principles, protocols and practices including, Quarantine, Contact Tracing, PPE Utilization and Antibiotic Stewardship.
  • Two years of supervisory experience in a Long-Term Care setting preferred.

Clinical Expertise

  • Knowledge of standards of care and practices applicable to the delivery of geriatric services, complex medical conditions, multiple medical diagnoses, including preventive measures, rehabilitation, and promoting independence.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Language Ability:
    • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and speaking the primary language of the residents.
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Mathematical Skills:
    • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as dosages, fluid intake & output, accurate measurements, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry as needed to the delivery of medical services.
  • Cognitive Demands:
    • Ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Computer Skills:
    • Ability to use Microsoft Windows. Ability to use software to design calendars and signs. Ability to use the Internet.
  • Ability to operate a car/truck and maintain a valid driver’s license. Ability to operate general office equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY

  • Works primarily indoors in a climate-controlled setting
  • Possible exposure to unpleasant odors
  • Possible exposure to chemicals as identified in the MSDS Manual
  • Continuous exposure to residents who are ill, confused, irritable and irrational
